Alain Delon is the coolest killer to hit the screen, a film noir loner for the modern era, in Jean-Pierre Melville's austere 1967 French crime classic. Delon's impassive hit man, Jef Costello, is the ultimate professional in an alienated world of glass and metal. On his latest contract, however, he lets a witness live--a charming jazz pianist, Valerie (Cathy Rosier), who neglects to identify him in the police lineup. When Costello survives an assassination attempt by his employers, he carefully plots his next moves as cops and criminals close in and he prepares for one last job. Melville meticulously details every move by Costello and the police in fascinating wordless sequences, from Costello's preparations for his first hit to the cops' exhaustive efforts to tail Jef as he lines up his... The train robbery sequence has all the realism of an episode of The Thunderbirds. I'm sorry, but if you could see the wires on the model helicopter in 2005, you could have seen them in 1972. The first 20 minutes, a bank heist by the sea, on the other hand, is Melville at his halucinatory best. This movie is worth seeing if you are a Melville fan and want to see a primary source of material for Tarantino, but if you want to see great, late Melville, stick to Le Cercle Rouge and Le Samourai. This wonderful little gem of a movie is terribly underrated. Talented director Rene Clement (Purple Noon, Forbidden Games, ETC.) is in top form with this suspensful crime drama that takes an unexpected twist and Alain Delon has never looked better (except in Purple Noon... maybe). Fans of Purple Noon and 1960s French crime cinema should really enjoy it!
All the actors give terrific involved performances and the energy between a young Jane Fonda (Barbarella era) and Alain Delon is electric!!
Also of note - Lalo Schifrin produced an amazing score for this film that will stick with you long after it's over.
The DVD quality is terrific and the film looks very sharp, which highlights Henri Decae's amazing cinematography. Well worth purchasing if you can't find the DVD for rent! The classic meets the cool when dapper Jean Gabin teams up with smoldering matinee idol Alain Delon in Henri Verneuil's 1962 caper film Any Number Can Win. White-haired Gabin carries decades of French crime films with him as the career criminal who shuffles home from a five-year prison stretch and finds himself a stranger among the new high-rise apartments that have sprung up around his cozy old cottage. Aging delinquent Delon (who looks as if he stepped out of the road show of Grease under his slick hair and black leather jacket) becomes his unlikely partner in a scheme to knock off the richest casino on the Mediterranean coast, the youthful brawn to Gabin's experience and calculation. Posing as rich high rollers, they scope out the joint, and Delon woos a leggy ... Red Sun has Bronson and Mifune, two great action stars, journeying out in the Old West, trying to retrieve a jeweled sword that was suppose to be a gift for the President of the United States from the Emperor of Japan. Bronson, Ursula and Mifune all are at their peak (Playing themselves). Mifune who never learned to speak English, spoke his own lines. Just to watch Mifune's samurai tactics vs. Bronson's gun fighting skills is worth the whole movie. And of course this movie is a must for anyone who loved either The Magnificent Seven or the Seven Samuari.
The Magnificent Seven was the American was a ripoff of Akira Kurosawa's classic, The Seven Samurai. Here we have Charles Bronson, who played the skilled rifleman, Bernardo O'Reilly, in the Magnificent Seven, paired up with Toshiro... Zorro itself is for children. The inspiration this movie gave me when I was 12 is still with me. However, when I watched it later I discovered more of subtle humor that I did not understand as a child. I hoped to get the tape and watch it again, go back to the old world, nice dresses, courage, bravery, great acting, fantacy, punishing the evil... but the dvd was abridged, those episodes that I had discovered later - cut out, quality terrible - probably videotaped in the movie theater and than put on dvd. I am still looking for a complete version of the movie. it has to be around 2,5 hours, but definitely not less than 2 hours.

Forget the love story. If you're a real biker you'll love the flick for the asthetics of motorcycles and the feeling of riding in the wind. It features a very nice Norton and a Harley. This movie will be appreciated by those who lived in the 60's and rode bikes. I highly reccomend this video to all us older bikers!
