This 1979 comedy is absolutely indispensable for fans of Peter Falk, Alan Arkin, or Andrew Bergman, who wrote the film's screenplay and went on to direct The Freshman and Honeymoon in Vegas. (Let's forgive him for Striptease.) Arkin is extraordinarily funny as a dentist who quickly grows skeptical about the wild claims of his daughter's future father-in-law (Peter Falk) that he is a CIA agent. When he is drawn into a bizarre adventure in a banana republic, however, he takes a different view. Arthur Hiller (Love Story) provides serviceable direction, but the real draw here is the perfect chemistry between the two leads and Bergman's weirdly comic mind. Watch for the look on Arkin's face when Falk's character tells a story about giant tse-tse flies. --Tom... Learn More

This film ranks among my all-time "Top 10." It features a brilliant script by Jules Feiffer, outstanding performances by (in no particular order) Elliott Gould, Alan Arkin, Donald Sutherland, Vincent Gardenia, Lou Jacobi -- the list goes on and on. Although the film's view of life is extraordinarily bleak -- not for kids! -- it is also riotously funny -- especially if you grew up in New York City in the 1960s. Among the casualties here are the famliy, organized religion, the subway system, the police, the military, the postal service, and the courts. Everyone should see this film at least once. In 1969, the democratically elected government of Brazil was toppled and a military dictatorship took its place. The junta ruled through terror and intimidation, torturing political enemies, controlling the press, and severely curtailing freedoms. A group of Che Guevara-worshipping Marxist radicals (the MR-8) plotted to kidnap an American diplomat (Alan Arkin) to force the government to meet their demands. The college radicals hooked up with two senior revolutionaries, an avuncular veteran of the Spanish Civil War and a cold, ruthlessly intense younger man who becomes their commandant. What could easily have become an overwrought drama is instead played out in understatement. The middle-class radicals falter more than once when it looks like they will indeed have to execute their captive;... The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming looks overly cute now, but really, it was pretty hip for 1966. The cold war was in full deep-freeze when this well-meaning comedy tried to thaw things out a little: a Soviet submarine beaches on the New England coast, sending the locals into a paranoid frenzy. The chief pleasure of the film is Alan Arkin as the sub captain; this was Arkin's first major film role, and he had already mastered his exasperated, slow-burning frown (to say nothing of mastering his Russian dialogue). Arkin snagged an Oscar® nomination, with the movie receiving nominations for best picture, adapted screenplay, and editing--nods that reflect the film's smashing success at the box office. Somewhat dated now, the movie still has its place in the roster of... This is one of the most boring films I've ever seen. I definitely think it had the potential to be good. What I didn't like was that you didn't really get to know the characters. I felt like an outsider while watching this film. I think if the writers had started out the film showing us the characters as kids at camp then it would have been easier to identify with them. I also thought the actor who played "Uncle Lou" was awful. His acting stunk, although I thought all the others were good. I have fond memories of summer camp so I think the concept of a camp reunion is good, but this one bombed. No wonder it isn't wasn't very popular. I hope a better summer camp movie comes out soon.
