Only The Lonely is a good romantic comedy type movie that has a great cast that includes, John Candy, Ally Sheedy, Maureen O'Hara, Anthony Quinn and Milo O'Shea. The movie is about a Irish American cop who lives in Boston with his over bearing overly opinionated mother and he falls in love with a woman who is mother doesn't like. A reporter stuck doing filler stories wants to break into real news. She gets a tip about animal abuse from an insider at a local corporation. She sneaks in and finds outrageous animal testing going on. One animal is a large dog that she decides to take with her. The viewer knows that this is no ordinary dog but the reporter does not see it.
Max, the dog, is actually a genetic blend of several animals thus giving it abilities beyond that of normal dogs. Max is also very intelligent. Max seems to take a real liking to the reporter and follows her direction while also following his darker purposes. The corporation's head, a scientist, is trying to get Max back as he believes Max will degenerate into a fearsome killing machine.
Any movie that has Beverly D'Angelo as the fairy godmother is going to be my kind of movie. I have been a fan of D'Angelo's ever since she played Patsy Cline, including doing all of her own singing, in "Coal Miner's Daughter," and when I saw "National Lampoon's Vacation" I was not disappointed to discover that the film's R rating did not involve nudity because of the scene with Christie Brinkley in the swimming pool. Besides, when you throw supporting performances by Tom Skerritt and Merry Clayton into this film, you can forgive a lot of the shortcoming of "Maid to Order."
