A collective vanity piece for the so-called Brat Pack of the 1980s, this coming-of-age movie--written and directed by Joel Schumacher (A Time to Kill)--is a largely unbelievable ensemble piece about college grads having trouble getting a lift-off into adulthood. As in John Hughes's Breakfast Club--which has a lot of casting overlap with this film--each actor plays a rather narrow type with problems common to his or her classification. Some (as with Rob Lowe's seemingly doomstruck character) are more absurd than others. But absurdity isn't the issue in this movie; a general sense of indulgence is. Schumacher not only presumes an undeserved mystique about this cast, but he also exploits it and comes up empty. --Tom KeoghLearn More

THE THING ABOUT "HEAVEN HELP US" IS IT IS SO VERY MUCH LIKE THE ALL MALE CATHOLIC BOYS SCHOOL I ATTENDED FROM 1959-1963 IN THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY IN CALIFORNIA. IN FACT, SO MANY THINGS IN THE MOVIE ARE SIMILAR OR THE SAME, IT MAKES ME WONDER IF SOMEONE WASN'T WATCHING US. IT IS HILARIOUS BEYOND BELIEF FOR SURVIVING EX-CATHOLICS LIKE MY WIFE AND MYSELF, AND THE CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN REFUSE TO BELIEVE SCHOOLS LIKE THAT EXISTED, AND PROBABLY STILL DO. LOOK, I WENT TO A SCHOOL THAT WAS REPRESENTATIVE OF HOW EDUCATION WOULD HAVE BEEN HAD HITLER WON THE WAR, BUT THERE WAS SO MUCH FUN AND FRIENDSHIP AMONG THE STUDENTS, IT WAS ACTUALLY A GOOD EXPERIENCE. THIS MOVIE IS FOR ANY OF YOU WHO WANT TO REMEMBER AND LAUGH, NOW THAT YOU'VE ESCAPED. IT'S ONE OF MY 5 FAVORITE MOVIES EVER. People in movies just don't break out into song and dance often enough anymore--at least that's the sentiment of Anything But Love, a throwback to the Fred & Ginger era. Sweet-voiced redhead Isabel Rose plays an aspiring songbird in present-day Manhattan (in other words, she's a waitress), singing her beloved standards in a dowdy little club and auditioning for the big break. In order to learn piano, she must endure lessons from a cynical slob (Andrew McCarthy), with whom, of course, she strikes sparks. Anyone with an inclination toward old musicals will probably be willing to go the extra mile for this awkward, low-budget offering. It never really takes wing, but does have two attractions: the fresh presence of Isabel Rose (who also co-wrote the script), who's hopelessly lost in... Thanks to the anonymity of this forum, I can freely admit that I like this movie (in fact, I have a tape of it somewhere). It's the basic story of a guy (McCarthy) who has everything going for him, but longs to take a walk on the wild side. Enter Molly Ringwald's character, a white-trash vixen that completely captivates him and turns his life upside down. Fine cinematography with an absolutely heart-wrenching ending. This flick and Less Than Zero are my two favorite Andrew McCarthy movies. Go easy on me. In 1978 Italy, anarchy is in the air as the Red Brigades keep the country in a state of terror. Reporter David (Andrew McCarthy) moves blithely among the mayhem; after all, he's an American citizen and untouchable, right? When the manuscript for his political novel, patterned after the Brigades, falls into the wrong hands, it draws the unwelcome attentions of the Brigades, the police, and aggressive American photojournalist Allison (Sharon Stone) and lands David in hot water. Director John Frankenheimer took an overworked plot and made the best of it, though McCarthy is a bit puny as David. As would be expected in a Frankenheimer effort, though, the action segments shine with lithe editing and Frankenheimer's instincts for composition and camera work. The riots and chase segments make use...
