The show that first defined the Broadway musical has never come to the screen intact, despite three tries. But take this splashy 1951 MGM extravaganza on its own terms, and it boggles the eyes. Not to mention the ears: The Kern-Hammerstein score includes some staples of the American songbook, such as "Make Believe," "After the Ball," and "Can't Help Lovin' That Man." Perhaps a riverboat gambler is almost too-easy casting for Howard Keel, and Kathryn Grayson is overly twittery, which may be why the film's middle sags when they take center stage. But any time the uncannily beautiful Ava Gardner smolders, a lush tragic undertone takes over (even if the most interesting parts of her story seem to take place offscreen). The physical production is extraordinary: the busy riverside... Learn More

Oh man, every time I watch THE SENTINEL it gives me the creeps. Just imagine you are a beautiful model and you have it made, you get to move into a spacious and very lavish apartment. You make some new friends with neighbors...who don't even exist! They are all souls from the gateway to hell. And a blind priest (reminds me of the mystic Emily in THE BEYOND) is the guardian of this gateway. Cristina Raines portrays her character Alison with such gusto, and Chris Sarandon is pleasant, but then really creepy after he becomes 'sentinel-ized' and torments Alison. There are impressive cameos from Jeff Goldbulm, Christopher Walken, and the late Jerry Orbach. While the movie has aged some and not everyone's acting is 100%, it remains one of the scariest flicks.
This 1953 follow-up to the successful teaming of actor Robert Taylor and director Richard Thorpe on Ivanhoe isn't quite as good a film, but it is a sumptuous adventure-romance shot on location in England. MGM's first widescreen production finds Taylor playing Sir Lancelot to Mel Ferrer's King Arthur. Based in part on Thomas Malory's 14th-century version of the Camelot legend, Knights of the Round Table tells the familiar tale of Arthur's construction of a Utopian kingdom, where virtue, courage, and a sense of possibility rule the hearts of strong men. Lancelot is there every step of the way, but after Arthur marries a particularly bodacious Guinevere (Ava Gardner), Lancelot can't stifle his love for her, nor can she stifle her own for him. That chink in the wall of the... Several pieces of Hemingway fiction fold together for this pastiche movie, in which a writer (Gregory Peck) lies on the slope of Africa's famous mountain and thinks back on his life while awaiting medical attention. "Africa" in this case is a back-screen projection; fortunately, the majority of the film is told through flashbacks set in France, Spain, and other parts of the Dark Continent. Peck's relationships with various women (played by Susan Hayward, Ava Gardner, and Hildegard Knef) are at the center of his recollections, but the overall thesis is a very Hemingway-esque summary of the responsibility of a writer to get at the truth. --Tom KeoghMore Info About This DVD Actor(s): Gregory Peck - Susan Hayward - Ava Gardner Director(s): Henry King DVD Release Date: Released the 23 April 2002 Special Order
