DVD The Spanish Prisoner

Campbell Scott plays a green young technocrat who invents a secret and highly successful high-tech process that, it appears, most of the free world would like to get their hands on. His own company may not be dealing with him fairly, and competitors are lurking around every street corner and kiddie carousel in New York (not to mention Caribbean hideaways) hoping to steal, cajole, or trick him out of the formula. The plot is as full of switchbacks as a mountain highway, and the delights are in watching it unfold around Scott, who is not so much of a naif that he doesn't catch on that not only his formula, but his life, are in dire danger. Steve Martin is consummately assured--and scary as hell--as a wealthy big shot determined to come out on top. David Mamet's script is refreshingly free... Learn More

Columbo - The Complete Fourth Season

What can you say about Columbo, the unassuming and bungling, yet brilliant sleuth who always gets his man or woman. Part of the brilliance of this series is that the murder occurs at the beginning of the episode. Columbo is then called to the scene of the crime and in his annoying and ultimately endearing manner slowly unravels the mystery. It becomes obvious early on that Columbo has the uncanny instincts, intelligence and experience to handle the job and almost always has a suspect in mind. The murders are ingenious and sometimes umpremeditated, yet the murderers all ultimately incrimminate themselves by their own behavior and the many clues they drop along the way. When Columbo finally nabs his mouse after a long and determined pursuit, he then reveals to them their one fatal... More Info About This DVD

Saint Jack

This is a really great film if you want to watch something that's tremendously atmospheric and realistic. It was shot in Singapore in the late 1970s, and was intended to portray the country in the early 1970s, when the US war was still raging in Vietnam and US soldiers roamed throughout East Asia looking for some "R & R" (which usually meant prostitutes and booze).

Peter Bogdanovich shot the film almost entirely in the back-lots and alleys of Singapore, and the realism is astounding, since he used 99% genuine locations, and 95% local non-actors playing supporting roles. This was the "old" Singapore, teeming with life and seething masses of people who moved through the markets and shops and alleyways, making transactions and interacting. The realism is so palpable that I could almost... More Info About This DVD

Blue Moon

The movie uses a sci fi twist to make a point about love, commitment, relationships, and physical and emotional child abuse. I like this movie very much. It sets up a mysterious and romantic tone very well, it is well-acted, and the scenes are perfectly timed to maintain a good pace. More Info About This DVD

Tales of Ordinary Madness

"Style is the answer to everything," intones skid row poet Charles Serking, played by the suitably grizzled and worn Ben Gazarra, to his somnambulistic audience. Serking is, of course, a not-at-all veiled stand-in for beat legend Charles Bukowksi, whose autobiographical short stories were the basis for this film. But Serking, in many ways, comes off more like a gin-soaked fantasy of a skid row Hemingway whose sports of choice are alcohol, women, and sex. Behind the salt-and-pepper beard and rummy eyes lies an actor too poised to allow himself to fully sink into the alcoholic sloppiness that Mickey Rourke so easily brought to the screen in the less pretentious and more concise Barfly, which Bukowski himself scripted. But if Italian-born director Marco Ferreri stumbles over... More Info About This DVD

Opening Night

Gena Rowlands stars in John Cassavetes's drama of an aging, alcoholic stage actress in the days leading up to her latest Broadway opening. Just barely keeping herself together, she cracks after a young fan is killed while running after her limousine, continuing to see visions of the woman. Hitting the bottle even harder while her friends turn their heads and haul her off to spiritualists, she finally staggers in, barely able to stand, for her opening night performance. Like all of her collaborations with her writer-director husband, Rowlands is a woman on the verge of collapse, this time a lonely alcoholic whose very life is a performance. Overlong at 144 minutes, the film's long, loose scenes build through uncomfortable small talk and slow, tentative confrontations. Some of the scenes... More Info About This DVD
