DVD Gandhi

Sir Richard Attenborough's 1982 multiple-Oscar winner (including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Ben Kingsley) is an engrossing, reverential look at the life of Mohandas K. Gandhi, who introduced the doctrine of nonviolent resistance to the colonized people of India and who ultimately gained the nation its independence. Kingsley is magnificent as Gandhi as he changes over the course of the three-hour film from an insignificant lawyer to an international leader and symbol. Strong on history (the historic division between India and Pakistan, still a huge problem today, can be seen in its formative stages here) as well as character and ideas, this is a fine film. --Tom Keogh Learn More

House of Sand and Fog

Jennifer Connelly followed up her Academy Award for A Beautiful Mind with this dark but moving story of small mistakes that escalate, with tragic necessity, to disaster. In House of Sand and Fog, Kathy (Connelly) gets evicted from her house for failing to pay a tax she never should have been charged in the first place. The house is swiftly put up for auction and bought by a former military officer from Iran named Behrani (Ben Kingsley, Sexy Beast). When legal efforts fail her, Kathy turns to a sympathetic cop (Ron Eldard, Bastard Out of Carolina), who wants out of a loveless marriage and who's willing to step over legal boundaries if it might give him a fresh start. Topnotch performances by the entire cast make House of Sand and Fog a compelling... More Info About This DVD

Without a Clue

Without a Clue is an underrated comedy featuring stellar teamwork by two great actors, Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley. This Sherlock Holmes pastiche with a twist stars Kingsley as physician, writer, and self-effacing super-sleuth Dr. John Watson, who channels his genius for deduction into lucrative stories about Holmes. Watson wants the world to believe the fictional private eye actually exists, posing a problem when a steady stream of troubled souls come seeking Holmes's help. The doctor's prescription: hire a two-bit, drunken, skirt-chasing actor (Caine) to portray the Great Detective, an arrangement that causes Watson consternation whenever "Holmes" tries to improvise his way through a case. Wonderful comic timing and tension make Without a Clue a delight; Caine,... More Info About This DVD

The Magic Never Ends - The Life and Work of C.S. Lewis

This would have been even better had they only been able to avoid interviewing Walter Hooper, an apparent literary groupie who, according to Kathryn Lindskoog in the book "The C.S. Lewis Hoax," wormed his way into a position of power over the rights to the body of work Lewis left behind, and then apparently falsified documents and history, and promote himself. After reading Lindskoog's book, and then carefully listening to all the interviews in this documentary, it was a little creepy how Hooper sounded. He seemed to positively place Lewis on an altar and be worshipful of him, rather than merely honoring the man, as had the other interviewees. It is weird to see a man literally worship another man, to listen to that. Very odd. Disturbing. More Info About This DVD

Death and the Maiden

Roman Polanski's film adaptation of Ariel Dorfman's stunning play about the legacy of torture has more in common with the director's first film, Knife in the Water (with all the latter's unnerving ambiguities about power, sexual transgression, and confused alliances among three people) than a straightforward political parable. Sigourney Weaver (a bit underwhelming in this role, but good overall) plays a former political prisoner in an unnamed South American country that has gone democratic. She is married to a government official (fine work by Stuart Wilson) heading up official inquiries into the practice of torture under the former regime. Still shattered by her experience, Weaver's character seeks safe haven in closets of the cliff-top house she shares with her husband.... More Info About This DVD

Triumph of Love

Mira Sorvino is adorable in this lovely adaptation of the 17th-century comedy Triumph of Love. When a princess (Sorvino) sets out to return her throne to its rightful heir, the rightful heir turns out to be a handsome young man (Jay Rodan). Of course, the princess falls madly in love with him. Unfortunately, he's been trained by his mentor, an angry philosopher (Ben Kingsley), to hate the princess (he even practices archery using her picture as the target). To set things right and win her heart's desire, the princess dresses herself as a man and--switching from one disguise to another--begins wooing everyone in the philosopher's household, starting with his spinster sister (Fiona Shaw). Though the transformation from the stage to the screen is pretty straightforward, the costumes... More Info About This DVD
