The DVD release of Murphy Brown is particularly newsworthy. There had never been anyone on primetime quite like Murphy, the star investigative reporter for the Washington, D.C.-based television news magazine F.Y.I. As created by Diane English and embodied by Candice Bergen, Murphy was, in English's words, "Mike Wallace in a dress." On camera, she was tough, smart, and relentless. Off camera she was intriguingly flawed. In the pilot episode, her character returns to work following a stay at the Betty Ford Clinic. Over the course of the season, her sobriety is supremely tested by the chaotic goings-on inside the funniest newsroom since WJM on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Murphy must contend with an unending parade of ill-suited, stressed-out secretaries (a running joke... Learn More

Despite the tumultuous events in this sleek, handsome 1970 adaptation of Harold Robbins' bestselling novel, The Adventurers is arresting entertainment from the constantly inventive director of the original Alfie, Lewis Gilbert. Smoldering Yugoslavian actor Bekim Fehmiu stars as Dax Xenos, son of a revolutionary hero in an unnamed South American nation. As a child (played by Loris Loddi), Dax witnessed the murder of his mother and sisters by government goons, and he helped insurgent leader Rojo (Alan Badel) execute those responsible. As Dax grows up, his destiny is inexorably tied to the fate of his country and the whims of an increasingly despotic Rojo. But before he realizes that, the hunky gadabout chases women and races in the streets of Rome, spends some time as a gigolo... A fair candidate for the top-ten most foul major studio releases. This film is utterly worthless. Forget performances, storyline, cinematography... everything, every last element, takes a back seat to truly stomach-turning violence.
I have no particular axe to grind against violence in film. "Miami Blues", which sent the prissy NYC critical sorority into squeamish fits, is one of my favorites, along with "Silence of the Lambs" and "Portrait of a Serial Killer". Violence fits those films, and was handled well -- "Miami Blues" even succeeded in using it as very pointed comedy. Gore films, Hong Kong chopsocky, and their Tarantino/Rodriquez descendants all contain an element of play; they're meant to be taken on some level as cartoons. Not the case here -- this is clinical. Nor... More Info About This DVD Actor(s): Oliver Reed - Gene Hackman - Candice Bergen Director(s): Don Medford DVD Release Date: Released the 17 May 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

The up-and-down career of director John Milius had no finer moment than The Wind and the Lion, a dandy adventure tale. It's based on fact: An American (played by Candice Bergen) and her two children were kidnapped in 1904 Morocco by a Berber tribe, an international incident settled by President Theodore Roosevelt's "big stick" military muscle. The film's sweep and swagger are unabashedly old-fashioned, even as Milius occasionally pokes fun at the grand characters. Some of the peripheral material is sloppy, but as long as Milius keeps his sights locked on the two powerful protagonists, he's dead-on: Brian Keith makes a gutsy Roosevelt, and Sean Connery is in splendid form (with Scots accent in place--got a problem with that?) as the dashing Berber chieftain. Perhaps overshadowed... More Info About This DVD Actor(s): Sean Connery - Candice Bergen Director(s): John Milius DVD Release Date: Released the 06 January 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours

Although not as interesting as "Love Story," this sequel does allow us to see what Oliver's life was like in the years after Jenny's death.
The movie begins with Jenny's funeral and we watch Oliver go through the motions of living, but not really participating in anything except his work. One day, he meets a jogger played by Candice Bergen. They begin a relationship that is pretty much of a bore to all but the most devoted Ryan O'Neal fans (of which I am definitely one!). Ms. Bergen's portrayal is wooden and unappealing, and viewers are probably relieved when she announces she can no longer live with Jenny's ghost. The one good thing her character, Marcy Bonwit Nash, does is take Oliver on a tour of her company's Hong Kong factories. When Oliver sees the poor conditions there, he... Terrific action flick about a 700-mile endurance horse race with disparate characters as competitors. The characters are wonderfully drawn, though tending toward types (Gene Hackman, the good-guy animal lover; Candice Bergman, the bad girl turned good; Ben Johnson, the tough old coot; etc.; think STAGECOACH). They compete against each other, but at the same time grow to respect each other; they are all honorable and winners. Hackman is especially good as the good Samaritan in the lead. Best of all about the movie might be the photography, which is stunningly beautiful, though the slow-motion camera work (a fad of the times that thankfully has disappeared) is overdone. Worth a watch. More Info About This DVD Actor(s): Gene Hackman - Candice Bergen Director(s): Richard Brooks DVD Release Date: Released the 02 April 2002 Usually ships in 24 hours
