I was a little disappointed with this dvd. If you are an aficionado of any types of animation it is a nice little snipet of cartoons from the 30s and 40s, albeit the image quality is horrific as it looks like it is from the 30s and 40s. It would have been nice if these cartoons would have been digitized (cleaned up) then it would have been an amazing little gem and little catologue of animation history, but unfortunately that is not the case. Otherwise what is the point of having it on DVD?
The cartoons themselves are not as 'racy' as I would have had to believe. Obviously they were for this era; "black faced" characters, animal cruelty, sexual overtones, etc. All played down for our time. Spooky Toons culls 13 vintage cartoons, each centering on some poor bug-eyed creature contracting a usually misguided case of the creeps. To say it's fraught with the sort of frightful scenes that remind one of bats and broomsticks, though, would be misleading. Mostly, these nuggets (most less than 10 minuts long) jog nostalgia. Casper, star of two segments, was never fond of scaring folks to begin with, and Betty Boop, the other double-billed character, is too cutesie-poo to pull off a portrayal of genuine fear. Still, Spooky Toons ought to sit well with fans of the form and those more concerned with old-fashioned fun than Halloween-focused fare, as it trots out some early, largely forgotten gems. As the title suggests, many of the characters in this offbeat collection began in comic books, but not all: Felix the Cat and Betty Boop debuted in animated films, and Popeye, Little Nemo, and the Toonerville folk appeared in newspaper strips long before comic books existed. The most striking films are the two Superman shorts. In "The Underground World" (1943), a race of hawk-men threaten to dip Lois and a scientist into a vat of boiling wax. "Electronic Earthquake" (1942) features an Native American villain who insists that Manhattan Island still belongs to his people. The oddest entries in the collection are an example of "Do Do, the Kid from Outer Space," a '60s British series told in doggerel rhyme, and a chunk of "Tobor the 8th Man," an extremely limited Japanese superhero...
