DVD When a Stranger Calls

Released a year after John Carpenter's 1978 Halloween, this thriller by longtime actor-turned-director Fred Walton has held a strong following of its own. In an exemplary piece of suspense, the film begins with a babysitter (Carol Kane) fielding threatening phone calls while on the job. She soon finds that a pair of children in her charge have been murdered in their beds; she is nearly killed herself by the homicidal maniac before police arrive. As with Halloween, the action jumps some years ahead, when Kane's character is herself a wife and mother--and the monster escapes from a mental institution to re-create his original carnage in the heroine's own home. Between these exciting bookends, the film loses its way and becomes dissatisfying and obscure. But Walton compensates... Learn More

The American Revolution (History Channel)

This six-tape set provides a clear and complete narrative of the events surrounding the birth of America. Unfortunately, it is a bit dry, as the repetitive music is distracting and certain images are shown far too frequently. However, the varied materials used to tell this tale will please history buffs. The producers employed a blend of battle reenactments, location filming, paintings, engravings, and the narratives of actual letters and documents from the 1770s. Events are covered in detail--these are not just the highlights remembered from school. However, due to the density of the material, you have to be a fan of the genre. The narrators include such well-polished actors as Charles Durning, Michael Learned, Rick Schroder, and Cliff Robertson. --Rochelle O'Gorman More Info About This DVD

Lakeboat

For David Mamet fans, dialogue over special effects fans, fans of charming humor and people intertesed in a view of men without women...this is a quality film. Even for people who aren't fans of any of those things, but open to good acting and even bizarre, absurd conversations, funny non-sequitors. There are three great scenes: One from Jack Wallace as Fred, describing his introduction into the battle of the sexes, another between Jack Wallace and J.J. Johnston about Steven Seagal, and Robert Forster's tour de force monologue towards the end. More Info About This DVD

North Dallas Forty

A very savvy, 1978 film directed by Ted Kotcheff (First Blood) dealing with the seamier side of professional football. Phillip Elliott and Maxwell (Nick Nolte and Mac Davis, respectively) are players for a Texas football team loosely based on the championship Dallas Cowboys. Though at the peak of his football career, Elliott is a personal and physical mess, needing all manner of drugs prescribed by the team physician to play and even to move around. The indifference of the team management and the hypocritical stance toward recreational drug use versus the drug abuse practiced by the players leads to a crisis of conscience for Nolte. The combination of Nolte's volatile presence and Davis's understated performance as the quarterback who thinks he's seen it all helps make North... More Info About This DVD

Spy Hard

The legacy of 1980's Airplane! has lasted a long, long time, as this dopey, 1996 comedy demonstrates. Leslie Nielsen, who has made a fortune starring in most of these intermittently inspired spoof movies, plays a secret agent whose code name is WD-40 and whose supervillain nemesis is the armless General Rancor (Andy Griffith). As the battle rages and the sight gags fly (the entrance to a hospital and sanctuary for nuns reads "Our Lady of the Never-Had-the-Pickle Convent"), WD-40 is aided by the beautiful spy 3.14 (Nicolette Sheridan). As always in these things, there are plenty of parodying references to other movies (Pulp Fiction) and tons of cameos (Fabio, Dr. Joyce Brothers, and such). The funniest stuff takes place in the first few minutes as "Weird Al" Yankovic sings... More Info About This DVD
