One of Alfred Hitchcock's classics, this romantic thriller features a cast to kill for: Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant, and Claude Rains. Bergman plays the daughter of a disgraced father who is recruited by American agents to infiltrate a post-World War II spy ring in Brazil. Her control agent is Grant, who treats her with disdain while developing a deep romantic bond with her. Her assignment: to marry the suspected head of the ring (Rains) and get the goods on everyone involved. Danger, deceit, betrayal--and, yes, romance--all come together in a nearly perfect blend as the film builds to a terrific (and surprising) climax. Grant and Bergman rarely have been better. --Marshall FineLearn More

Fanny Skeffington, an incorrigible society flirt of the WWI era, was one of the meatiest roles and most exasperating women Bette Davis ever played. Flighty Fanny loves the attention of her male suitors, but marries the steadfast Jewish financier Job Skeffington (Claude Rains) for security; long after their wedding day, she still enjoys receiving gentlemen callers. Time catches up with Fanny, of course, and the bills are due by the time World War II rolls around.
Mr. Skeffington is a vintage Warner Bros. workout for Davis, who never shied away from playing unsympathetic or physically unappealing roles. (Her main worry here was looking pretty enough in the early reels to justify Fanny's reputation.) Her theatrical performance and Rains's impeccable work carry the handsomely... For being a film from 1933, The Invisible Man is a very good film. This DVD collection contains four other movies and a documentary.
The Invisible Man itself is not quite as good as its successors, however, it is well written and at times surprisingly original. The drawbacks are the Innkeeper's wife, who was (according to the documentary) hired for the entire reason I did not like her: she overreacts to everything. She's superstitious, overly suspicious of anyone, and screams an annoying scream that drives even the other prople in the inn batty. There is some mild humor and a bit of drama in The Invisible Man and Claude Rains does a passable job, with that voice that just creeps under your skin...
What famous horror classic, panned by reviewers upon its initial release in December of 1941, looks better and better every year? THE WOLF MAN, starring Claude Rains, Ralph Bellamy, Evelyn Ankers, and Lon Chaney Jr. as the hapless Larry Talbot.
The story is a familiar one: Larry, the son of esteemed Sir John (Rains) returns home to Wales after many years in America, is bitten by a werewolf (well played by Bela Lugosi), and becomes a werewolf himself. What's extraordinary is the fact that the film can be so effective today.
The biggest reason for this is the acting. Some classic films, pre-Actor's Studio, look pretty pathetic when it comes to realistic characterization. Not so THE WOLF MAN. Curt Siodmak's excellent screenplay (likened to a Greek Tragedy) provides... I usually get a DVD give it a quick look then write a review. This time I viewed the whole package before submitting my review. When you get your set carefully remove the discs.Look at the holder behind it.If you see a little plastic protrusion gently scratch it away with your fingernail then wipe clean. I'm glad I caught this in time. I'm sure this would have scratched my set.And probably yours. My set plays perfectly. The bonus features are great.Werewolf of London, Dracula (spanish), Dracula's Daughter, She-Wolf of London, and Son of Dracula, I consider as bonus films, the rest are the meat and potatoes of the set.A few years ago I considered purchasing Dracula on VHS, but the only copy I could find was with the Phillip Glass score. After viewing the disc in all three presentations(No... In this 1937 adaptation of the Mark Twain novel, Errol Flynn is billed as the star, but actually he's only a supporting character here. The stars of the movie are Billy and Bobby Mauch, twin brothers who appeared together in several 1930's movies. Here they play Prince Edward and Tom Canty, lookalikes who grew up in very different circumstances. By a series of mishaps they end up living in each other's shoes for a while, and each comes out the richer for the experience. Like 1939's "Elizabeth and Essex," this movie isn't so much a swashbuckler as it is a serious period costume drama. Claude Rains appears as the scheming Earl of Hertford who wants to be the power behind the throne, and Montague Love does a pretty darn good Henry VIII. Barton Maclane is pretty scary here as the father of...
