Adapted from Daniel Keyes's novel Flowers for Algernon, Charly must be viewed as a soap opera of and for its zeitgeist--the halcyon '60s, when "natural" was nirvana, the air hummed with the mantra "Everybody's beautiful," and all ills stemmed from institutional monoliths such as Science, Government, Education, Religion. Accordingly, Charly (Cliff Robertson) is a 30-year-old retardate whose doofus sweetness makes him superior to most able-minded folk, whether they're the bigoted dolts he sweeps floors for or the ambitious scientists who see him as the human equivalent of Algernon, a mouse they've surgically (but impermanently) smartened up. Naturally, post-op Charly, sporting a genius IQ, "sees things as they are." Trotted out as the neurosurgeons' poster boy, he... Learn More

Cliff Robertson has always been one of the hugely underrated actors of stage, TV & film. Anyone who saw his original performance in Days of Wine & Roses on Playhouse 90(with Piper Laurie) or saw him doing Tennessee Williams on Broadway knows that this is someone who for whatever reasons missed out on the major stardom that was his natural due. J.W. Coop is one more surprise from Mr. Robertson. This movie is the closest approximation I've ever seen on the screen to a Hemingway story. It's full of the rich true details of place and incident, and the aching pain of the fighter/cowboy/soldier/man rubbing up against life, trying to make some kind of mark, some kind of sense, before his end comes, & it always comes too soon for these guys. This is an oddball film to say the very least. The character studies and plot developments are a strange mix but it all seems to work thanks to Robert Aldrich's direction. Cliff Robertson is an American Navy Lieutenant sent on a mission in the New Hebrides in 1942 to destroy a Japanese radio site. Henry Fonda plays Captain Nolan who devices the mission and sends Robertson, fluent in Japanese, on his way to meet up with a British infantry patrol to execute the plan. Events go awry out in the jungle and Robertson finds himself at odds with a private played by Michael Caine. I don't think they could have chosen two lead actors more diametrically opposed as Michael Caine and Cliff Robertson. Who do they dislike more, the Japanese or each other? This choice of actors was a stroke of genius and... Its actually the only movie about the jersey devil. That may be a good thing... because in all actuallity it was the worst movie that I have ever seen. The story line was all jacked up from the jersey devil stories that I have heard. Special effects... I could do better with my own camcorder from '85. If you are thinking about buying this movie or even thinking of watching it, Save your time and money and watch a Pauly Shore movie or something. At least those are viewable. Boycott this dvd, the whole crew that worked on this movie and if you know one of these people please let them know how bad it is. Im sure they already know it too. I love this film from my childhood - yes some of the special effects look a bit ropey now, but that's more than made up for by the genuine footage of the real Mosquitos in action and Ron Goodwin's fantastic theme tune - easily one of the best movie themes ever.
( By the way, anyone unconvinced that George Lucas in fact got the idea for the Death Star scene fom this fine film might like to know the following: When Lucas originally devised Star Wars and was showing a rough cut print to the movie studio bigwigs, he hadn't had enough budget left for the SFX to show them the Death star finale. So instead, he intercut aerial dogfight footage from British WW2 movies including the Dambusters, the Battle Of Britain, and .....633 Squadron. Case closed!! Dismissed in 1968 as a plodding rip-off of The Dirty Dozen--without that 1967 film's sardonic, antiestablishment satire--The Devil's Brigade now plays like a nostalgic last gasp of the sentimental World War II action genre. Celebrating the 1st Special Service Force (a commando-like unit formed to fight in Norway but ultimately deployed in Italy), this typically broad Andrew V. McLaglen production recounts the teaming of some miscreant GIs with "the handpicked best of the best-trained army in the world"--the Canadians--under a U.S. officer (William Holden) who had never commanded men in combat. The first hour, heavy on machismo and low comedy, depicts the unit's training at an abandoned base in Montana, with nonstop international rivalry until Yanks and Canadians bond in a...
