Sort of comedy, sort of not, this film--cowritten, coproduced, and co-starring Damon Wayans--concerns a loser who takes an entry-level job at a credit company to impress a girl and soon gets caught up in fraud and blackmail. Marlon Wayans, Damon's brother, costars as a confederate in the chicanery. The film is meant to be both a jokefest and an edgy drama--the criminal activity is treated as a dark and serious matter--and the result is that Mo' Money succeeds on neither level. --Tom KeoghLearn More

Writer Ron Shelton (Tin Cup) and former National Lampoon scribe Tony Hendra collaborated on the script for this satire about a boxing promoter (Samuel L. Jackson) who gets behind a white fighter (Peter Berg) after his black slugger (Damon Wayans) is mired in a losing streak. While sharp and funny, it's never quite clear what the point of it all is. Director Reginald Hudlin (Boomerang) isn't strong enough or skilled enough as a filmmaker to make this level of satire leap off the screen; fortunately, he's got powerful allies in Jackson, Berg, Wayans, Jeff Goldblum, and the rest of the cast. --Tom KeoghMore Info About This DVD Actor(s): Samuel L. "JAP" meets rap in Marci X, a feel-good comedy that was filmed in 2000 and shelved for three years. Despite its lowly fate, this cross-cultural satire has a respectable pedigree, written by In and Out screenwriter Paul Rudnick (A.K.A. Premiere magazine columnist "Libby Gelman-Waxner") and directed with surprising vitality by Hollywood veteran Richard Benjamin, who seems doomed to a string of flops. Lisa Kudrow is perfectly cast as a Jewish socialite whose corporate mogul father (Benjamin) is being ruined by controversy involving a raunchy hip-hop star (Damon Wayans) on his payroll, and an ultra-conservative senator (Christine Barnaski) who demands censorship and public apologies. Aided by Marc Shaiman's catchy spoof-songs, Rudnick and Benjamin earn some big laughs... Hmmm. I don't understand the negative reviews of this film. I thought it was funny and good entertainment. I give it three and one-half stars, especially if one loves sports.
The Utah Jazz meet the Boston Celtics in the final two games of a fictitious NBA championship series. Two Celtics fans who live and die with their beloved team are at the game, and get a bit more involved in the outcome of the series than most fans would, that's for sure. I laughed out loud a number of times watching this film, and that's how I judge a comedy.
I guess some of the reviewers who didn't like the film were disappointed that the film wasn't a documentary or something. Ya know, the basketball isn't real, guys! It's a movie, with actors and extras and probably semi-pro players doing the action scenes.... This is definitely one of the strangest superhero movies I've ever seen. Daryl (Damon Wayans) and Kevin (David Alan Grier) are two brothers who grew up on watching "Batman"...and nothing else is explored with that opening scene.
Kevin has grown up to be an writer for one crazed editor. Daryl, on the other hand, is an inventor who, of course, has dozens of ridiculous gadgets that will somehow pay off...or will they? Yes, his tools are creative, but they serve no purpose other than comic relief, which I didn't find funny except for Daryl's embarassment.
Sadly, the two brothers' grandmother is killed because she works for a City Mayor nominee who ticked off a cliched mobster (Jon Polito). Daryl swears revenge by dressing up in a ridiculous costume and using... Director Spike Lee has never shied away from controversy, and with Bamboozled he tackles a thorny mix of racism and how images are bought and sold. A frustrated TV writer named Delacroix (Damon Wayans), unable to break his contract, tries to get fired by proposing a new minstrel show, complete with dancers in blackface. But the network loves the idea, and Delacroix hires two street performers (Savion Glover, who is truly the finest tap dancer since Fred Astaire, and Tommy Davidson) whose hunger for success and ignorance of history combine to make them accept the blackface. Despite protests, the show is a huge success--but gradually, the mental balance of everyone involved starts to crumble. As an argument, Bamboozled is incoherent--but how can racism be discussed rationally...
