In 1987, almost a hundred years after its first production, the romantic story of Cyrano de Bergerac found new life in a winsome film written by Steve Martin. Roxanne updates the tale with a smart '80s spin, yet writer-star Martin stays close to the old-fashioned heart of the matter. He plays a small-town firefighter named C.D. Bales, whose otherwise unremarkable existence is crowned by an amazingly long nose. He falls for the world's most beautiful astronomer (Daryl Hannah), but he is embarrassed by the size of his proboscis and prefers to stay on the sidelines. Like Cyrano, the shy C.D. instead helps a handsome friend (Rick Rossovich) woo the fair lady by providing flowery sentiments and soulful poetry. Not only does the story still work, but Australian director Fred Schepisi... Learn More

"The Bride" (Uma Thurman) gets her satisfaction--and so do we--in Quentin Tarantino's "roaring rampage of revenge," Kill Bill, Vol. 2. Where Vol. 1 was a hyper-kinetic tribute to the Asian chop-socky grindhouse flicks that have been thoroughly cross-referenced in Tarantino's film-loving brain, Vol. 2--not a sequel, but Part Two of a breathtakingly cinematic epic--is Tarantino's contemporary martial-arts Western, fueled by iconic images, music, and themes lifted from any source that Tarantino holds dear, from the action-packed cheapies of William Witney (one of several filmmakers Tarantino gratefully honors in the closing credits) to the spaghetti epics of Sergio Leone. Tarantino doesn't copy so much as elevate the genres he loves, and the entirety of Kill Bill... Director Quentin Tarantino really blows up minds with this movie. One of the best films made in this time. Tarantino takes us back in time to an almost samurai movie, mixed with today's reality and problems. Uma Thurman's caracter the bride is a "super hero" for women of nowadays. Really great movie, original plot and lot's and lot's of blood and overall ACTION.... For some reason, this great full length animated feature is long out of print, and has never been released on DVD. It is a real shame. A MAN CALLED FLINTSTONE is great. The film (from 1966) features a Fred Flinstone look-a-like, secret agent ROCK SLAG. As you probably guessed, Fred becomes mistaken for the secret agent, and gets mixed up in a hilarious adventure instead of the quiet vacation that he had intended. I don't want to give too much away in case you haven't seen it. A highly recommended classic! John Sayles tackles one of his most provocative projects in Silver City, a broadside on politics and campaigning. It's one of Sayles's multi-character tapestries, set during a tarnished governor's race in Colorado. Chris Cooper has kicky fun as a feather-brained candidate, whose nonsensical speeches deliberately evoke the 43rd U.S. president. He doesn't get nearly enough screen time, because the film follows a burned-out private detective (the awkward Danny Huston) as he tugs at conspiracies. Sayles's understanding of the connected relationships in the political world is keen, and his malignant ending scores points--though the issues are more convincing than the characters. A subplot romance between Huston and journalist Maria Bello is tired, and there's a rushed quality that... "Hello." This movie would have done better at the box office if it had been cleaned up some because the story is the kind that children like. While this movie has no nudity it does have some bad language and sexual discussions that are inappropriate for children and are probably why it received an "R" rating.
I enjoyed this movie for its advertisements which show the power of truth. I teach marketing at the University of Southern Mississippi and use this movie in my class to introduce several ideas about the art of marketing communications. Everyone howls at the ads and it is very popular with my students.
But... you kind of have to enjoy Dudley Moore's type of humor to sit through the whole movie at one time. I personally find his movies to be tedious but... If you are like me, Sean Bean is what drew you to this movie. But you'll happily stay for the script, the cinematography, and the classic ensemble of actors. This is a film that aims to be both art and entertainment and succeeds.
Without giving too much away, the plot revolves around a mysterious blue suitcase that our hero - an out-of-work actor - is hired to deliver to an even more mysterious Yorkshire-accented Cowboy (Sean Bean) around whom people seem to...disappear.
The Big Empty is quirky but not a full-on comedy. It has a strong existential vibe with a touch of Film Noir. If you watch it with a group, there will be plenty of discussion afterwards. Although rated "R", I would guess that this film would be rated PG-13 if not for the presence of the "F" word.
