Larry McMurtry's novel becomes a somewhat lumpy film as directed by James L. Brooks (As Good As It Gets). Nevertheless, it is entirely winning, with Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger playing a combative mother and daughter who see each other through various ups and downs in love and loss, and most especially through a terminal illness endured by Winger's character. Jack Nicholson deservedly won an Oscar for his supporting role as a free-spirited astronaut who backs away from a romance with MacLaine and then returns in the clutch. As he always does, Brooks keeps things from getting too soapy with his intense concentration on the soulful evolution of his characters. --Tom KeoghLearn More

Theresa Russell seduces rich men by conforming to their dreams in terms of appearance and behaviour, marries them, and then kills them. She thinks her means are undetectable. But Justice Department investigator Debra Winger has noticed a pattern, and becomes obsessed with tracking Russell down. She follows her to Hawaii (where she is working on her latest target), befriends her, and the stage is set for a psychological chess game.
The idea is promising, but the execution is uninspired. There is too much time spent on pretty pictures of Hawaii, and the narrative lacks drive, eroticism or real suspense. We are told that the two characters are obsessed, but aren't properly shown that they are, or even why they are. Finally, the resolution is particularly unconvincing.

I loved this movie and it seems from reading the reviews which preceded mine I am not alone in my opinion. And yet I don't recall this film being on any top ten box office list, either in its theatrical run on video and DVD. It's one of those films that sneaks up on you and I suspect expectations had a lot to do with the less than stellar box office. People expect a certain performance from Steve Martin ("The Jerk", his many SNL hosting gigs, "The Man With Two Brains") but "Leap of Faith" was not about bringing the funny. That doesn't mean there isn't humour in this movie. I laughed, I smiled, I cried and then in the end I was truly amazed. Jonas Nightingale (Martin) has decided to set up shop and "put on a show" for the local faithful. Fate, working through a broken down truck,... Robert Redford, usually a pretty good judge of material, got snookered badly in this Ivan Reitman comedy that also starred Debra Winger and Daryl Hannah. Redford is a rising assistant D.A. who is prosecuting a woman (Hannah) for theft of a painting by her father. Before he knows what hit him, he's involved romantically both with the defendant and with her scattered lawyer (Winger). Redford is as good as he can be, given the circumstances, but this is a movie that doesn't know where it's going. Originally intended as a serious film about the legal wrangling over the estate of the late Mark Rothko, this film quickly degenerated when the script was turned over to Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr., whose sparkling oeuvre includes Turner and Hooch. --Marshall FineMore Info About This DVD Actor(s): Robert Redford - Debra Winger - Daryl Hannah Director(s): Ivan Reitman DVD Release Date: Released the 01 April 2003 Usually ships within 24 hours

Husband and wife Arliss Howard (Full Metal Jacket) and Debra Winger (Terms of Endearment, An Officer and a Gentleman) star in Big Bad Love, a fragmented adaptation of stories by Southern writer Larry Brown. Leon Barlow (Howard) is a hard-drinking, heavy-smoking, long-haired, and deeply unhappy aspiring writer who pulls a dozen rejection slips out of his mailbox every day. He fights with his ex-wife Marilyn (Winger) over his undependability, helps his best friend Monroe (Paul Le Mat) paint a house, and generally tries to get through his life with some semblance of purpose. The struggle of everyday life is well balanced by vivid realizations of Barlow's dreams, fantasies, and fleeting thoughts. Just at the point when the vague plot of Big Bad... John Travolta traded in disco duds for a cowboy hat in this corny love story about a working man who breaks up with his girlfriend (Debra Winger), then plays out their relationship's turmoil inside a huge honky-tonk called Gilley's. The story essentially parallels Travolta's prior hit film, Saturday Night Fever, in its blend of ordinary life, incomplete relationships, and personal pride channeled into niche stardom at a neighborhood club. But for all its regional flavor, Urban Cowboy never enjoys the immediacy and urgency of Fever, and after awhile you can't help but feel bemused by the macho silliness of ongoing "mechanical bull" competitions (basically a faux rodeo device only brave men can master at great chiropractic risk). The Travolta-Winger relationship is... Master filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci applies his considerable talent to this haunting adaptation of the Paul Bowles novel. John Malkovich and Debra Winger play Port and Kit Moresby, characters loosely based on Bowles and his wife Jane, who flee New York for North Africa, where they hope to find mystical truths that will reignite the spark of their marriage. But instead they lose their moral bearings (with help from a friend, played by Campbell Scott, who has an affair with Kit) while traveling deeper and deeper into the Sahara. Before long, what started as a vacation at exotic lodgings has descended into a tour of hell, as they stumble farther and farther into an unknowable spiritual territory. Though long and at times slow-moving, the film features marvelously nuanced acting by Malkovich...
