This is a really great film if you want to watch something that's tremendously atmospheric and realistic. It was shot in Singapore in the late 1970s, and was intended to portray the country in the early 1970s, when the US war was still raging in Vietnam and US soldiers roamed throughout East Asia looking for some "R & R" (which usually meant prostitutes and booze).
Peter Bogdanovich shot the film almost entirely in the back-lots and alleys of Singapore, and the realism is astounding, since he used 99% genuine locations, and 95% local non-actors playing supporting roles. This was the "old" Singapore, teeming with life and seething masses of people who moved through the markets and shops and alleyways, making transactions and interacting. The realism is so palpable that I could almost... In the film "Brimstone and Treacle," Tom Bates (Denholm Elliot) owns a small evangelical publishing business. On the way home from work one evening, a rather strange young man literally crashes into him and proceeds to claim a prior acquaintance. Tom Bates manages to ditch the stranger, but the young man--whose name is Martin Taylor (Sting)--shows up at the beautiful, but remote, country home where Tom lives. Martin ostensibly wants to return Tom's wallet, but he fabricates excuses for staying. Martin claims a previous relationship with the daughter, Patricia, who is now basically a mental vegetable following a nasty accident 4 years previously. Martin very craftily discovers and gauges the domestic discord between Mr and Mrs Bates, and he capitalizes on this--weaseling his way in and... I think what the detractors of this film fail to appreciate is that Bill Murray is the perfect person for the role because he skillfully juxtapositions boyish charm with serious spiritual questioning. His naivete works to convey the resilience of innocence and joyfulness in the face of the horrors of war and life. September is best known as the movie Woody Allen made twice, bang on top of each other, and still brought in on time and on budget. He decided the casting wasn't working, switched some actors and roles, and altogether dumped Sam Shepard (who subsequently had very uncomplimentary things to say about Allen as a director of actors). That was some kind of achievement and said reams about Allen's efficiency and adaptability as a filmmaker. Unhappily, the congratulations end there, for September is the single most excruciating viewing experience the Woodman ever invited audiences to share.
You could say September is Interiors without the laughs (joke: there are no laughs in Interiors either), without the pull of the Hamptons shore outside the windows, and...
