Although worth watching, it is the worst of the Bible series pertaining to following scripture. The biggest problem is that they leave out key event and/or totally get them out of order. All in all it 'is' entertaining a pretty clean considering the story. Stay with this movie past what might look to you like "sleaze"- a very plain, middle-aged school teacher has an intense sexual relationship with his 17-year-old student--because it gets really good and becomes an examination of what he has with his equally-middle-aged, widowed, schoolteacher long-time love. What happens between them is the core of the movie. The principals are Dennis Hopper and Amy Irving. Dennis Hopper looks really ugly, and, of course, it's impossible for Amy Irving to look anything but lovely (even though they try here). They really make the movie. They're backed up by Hal Holbrook, Bary Busey, Julie Harris, and Priscilla Pointer. It's very well worth your time. "A man went looking for America and couldn't find it anywhere" announced the posters that advertised "Easy Rider" (1969). It was a fitting summation of the low-budget film which defied Hollywood traditions and, at the same time, grossed more money than most of the lavish productions of the same year. Although this was the first film either of them had directed, both Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda were very familiar with the youth exploitation films of the Sixties, having appeared in "The Wild Angels" (1966), "The Trip" (1967) and "The Glory Stompers" {1968). They were able to finance their film through Columbia Pictures for $340,000 and it went on to take in more than $50 million at the box-office.
The story meanders way too much, the plot is put together in a way very unconducive to a coherent structure, things happen that make no sense and contribute nothing to the main story, cliches abound, and I wasn't sure at what resolution Richard Grieco's character had arrived by the end in the US version. Was he going to leave the priesthood to pursue a relationship with the art student? Maybe I would have been more entertained had I seen the European version to which the other reviewers alluded. Otherwise, this was just another straight-to-video time waster. Who writes these scripts, anyway?! Even a fine cast can't do much to breathe life into this thin gangster piece. Dennis Hopper stars as a pathetic small-timer trying to get ahead with one final score. The bad guys don't take him seriously, a cop (Wesley Snipes) is content to mow him down if necessary, and a woman (Lolita Davidovich) who cares about him just wants him to settle down. Director James B. Harris has the raw elements of a middling film noir in front of him, but he can't even link up the pieces enough to make Snipes and Hopper appear to be in the same movie. The DVD release has a full-screen presentation, Dolby sound, and closed captioning. --Tom KeoghMore Info About This DVD Actor(s): Wesley Snipes - Dennis Hopper Director(s): James B.
