Ben du Toit is a schoolteacher who always has considered himself a man of caring and justice, at least on the individual level. When his gardener's son is brutally beaten up by the police at a demonstration by black school children, he gradually begins to realize his society is built on a pillar of injustice and exploitation.
This incredibly powerful film deals intelligently with the devastatingly brutal tensions surrounding the explosive issues within assumed class tiers and the racially incongruous tempest that was the violent melting pot of southern Africa.

THE THING ABOUT "HEAVEN HELP US" IS IT IS SO VERY MUCH LIKE THE ALL MALE CATHOLIC BOYS SCHOOL I ATTENDED FROM 1959-1963 IN THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY IN CALIFORNIA. IN FACT, SO MANY THINGS IN THE MOVIE ARE SIMILAR OR THE SAME, IT MAKES ME WONDER IF SOMEONE WASN'T WATCHING US. IT IS HILARIOUS BEYOND BELIEF FOR SURVIVING EX-CATHOLICS LIKE MY WIFE AND MYSELF, AND THE CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN REFUSE TO BELIEVE SCHOOLS LIKE THAT EXISTED, AND PROBABLY STILL DO. LOOK, I WENT TO A SCHOOL THAT WAS REPRESENTATIVE OF HOW EDUCATION WOULD HAVE BEEN HAD HITLER WON THE WAR, BUT THERE WAS SO MUCH FUN AND FRIENDSHIP AMONG THE STUDENTS, IT WAS ACTUALLY A GOOD EXPERIENCE. Nathanael West's The Day of the Locust is by consensus the great Hollywood novel, a poison-pen letter aimed squarely at the tinsel heart of the movie biz. Only in the 1970s could Hollywood actually hazard a film of this story, and the result is suitably corrosive. William Atherton is the observer Tod, Karen Black the blond starlet Faye, and Donald Sutherland the hulking Homer--but they are easily out-acted by the colorful supporting cast. A made-for-TV "Thomas Crown Affair (1968)" tries hard to duplicate the Steve McQueen-Faye Dunaway chemistry, using Donald Sutherland and Jennifer O'Neill in this watery version.
Role reversal sets O'Neill as the wealthy jewel thief, hunted seductively by insurance investigator Sutherland..who works most of the film in shirts open to the navel...Ahh, the 70's!
O'Neill is beautiful and stylish, drives fast cars, swims unclothed and stays away from complex sentences, while Sutherland smokes those little thin cigars and from time to time falls back on his 'Hawkeye' grin. There is a nice turn by Jon Cypher as the heavy. Soap opera vet Eric Braeden gets some on-screen time as does, of all people Robert Duvall as the straight-arrow cop.
Though it bears little resemblance to the original 1969 thriller starring Michael Caine, the 2003 remake of The Italian Job stands on its own as a caper comedy that's well above average. The title's a misnomer--this time it's actually a Los Angeles job--but the action's just as exciting as it propels a breezy tale of honor and dishonor among competing thieves.
