I am very much looking forward to this release, now even more after learning the lost spider pit sequence has been reconstructed by Peter Jackson, creator of the new "King Kong" due out in theaters in December. I'm just hopeful the spider scene is included in the newly restored film and is not just an extra on the bonus features disc.
The first movie I ever watched, according to my mother, was the original "King Kong." I apparently watched it intently from my playpen sometime in the early 1970s. "King Kong" also happens to be the first videotape I purchased in the 1980s. I remember reading the Book of Lists 2 back in the late 1970s and it featured a section on the most famous scenes cut out of movies. One of them was the scene in 1931's "Frankenstein," when Boris Karloff, playing... More Info About This DVD Actor(s): Fay Wray - Robert Armstrong Director(s): Merian C. Cooper - Ernest B. "Now you see it. You're amazed. You can't believe it. Your eyes open wider. It's horrible, but you can't look away. There's no chance for you. No escape. You're helpless, helpless. There's just one chance, if you can scream. Throw your arms across your eyes and scream, scream for your life!"
And scream Fay Wray does most famously in this monster classic, one of the greatest adventure films of all time, which even in an era of computer-generated wizardry remains a marvel of stop-motion animation. Robert Armstrong stars as famed adventurer Carl Denham, who is leading a "crazy voyage" to a mysterious, uncharted island to photograph "something monstrous ... neither beast nor man." Also aboard is waif Ann Darrow (Fay Wray) and Bruce Cabot as big lug John Driscoll, the ship's first mate.... More Info About This DVD Actor(s): Fay Wray - Robert Armstrong Director(s): Merian C. The Most Dangerous Game is a classic, one of the first talkies to get pictures moving after five very static years following the birth of sound. The plot finds resourceful hero Joel McCrea and heroine Fay Wray being hunted on the island of the insane Zaroff (Leslie Banks). One of the grandfathers of the summer blockbuster, the film's setup has been reworked many times since, notably in John Woo's Hard Target (1993). By modern standards it's technically primitive, though still gripping stuff, complete with the jungle set built as a test run for King Kong (1933) and graced by Max Steiner's prototype of all Hollywood action scores. --Gary S.
