Chalk this one up as something that seemed like a good idea at the time. Frank Langella had just taken Broadway by storm in a revival of the play based on Bram Stoker's classic vampire novel. He was tall, elegant, and almost painfully romantic--all qualities that failed to translate to this garish, tarted-up film version. The story remains the same, if told in greater length than in Bela Lugosi's version. The film even offered Laurence Olivier as vampire-hunter Van Helsing (in one of several roles he played during the period that required a middle-European accent) and a young Kate Nelligan as the woman whose love (and blood) Dracula most wants. But director John Badham, working from W.D. Richter's clunky script, makes a hash of most of it, relying on special effects to do the heavy... If everyone on this page has given this movie five stars, then you're obviously no older than fourteen. Wait a couple of years and you'll see that your palette for films will dramatically change, and this movie will begin to collect dust among your choice favorites. I have to admit, I was once addicted to this film very badly, but now I know that Ed Furlong cannot even be called an actor. He is bland and lifeless in every role he's ever played with the exception of John Conner in Terminator 2: Judgement Day. What I did enjoy was the amusing characterization of the antagonist, Mr. Brainscan himself. Whoever played him was a great character actor, but this movie can definetely be classified as mere popcorn. A late-nighter for when there's nothing else to watch and you're desperate for... Stir of Echoes is a terrifically engrossing supernatural thriller that perfectly blends mystery, horror, and drama into one deft mix. It also boasts Kevin Bacon's best performance.
The Ninth Gate, on the other hand, is a lazy motion picture that undeniably boasts strong atmosphere and intrigue, but fails to deliver upon its potential. The movie ultimately leads nowhere, a destination so unfulfilling it makes the previous two hours ten minutes a total waste. Whoopi Goldberg plays a loudmouthed, obsessive fan of the New York Knicks who wins a contest to coach the team. She soon finds that handling players is tough, fans are tough, owners are tough, and so on, but she's big enough to conquer them all with determination, smarts, and personality. The first half of the film is pretty cute as Goldberg's character makes the jump from opinionated spectator to the gal in the hot seat. But everything derails in the second half, which is mostly an op-ed piece about keeping pro-ball teams from moving out of their cities. --Tom KeoghMore Info About This DVD Actor(s): Whoopi Goldberg - Frank Langella - Dennis Farina Director(s): Steve Rash DVD Release Date: Released the 30 October 2001 Usually ships in 24 hours
