There's one scene in the middle of The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox--with Goldie Hawn and George Segal carrying on a foreign language conversation that stumbles across French, German, and Italian (with a little Yiddish thrown in)--that qualifies as a memorably funny double-talk sequence. The rest of this broad Western quasi-spoof is pretty coarse. Segal is a cardshark who appropriates a bag full of cash; Goldie is a dancehall girl without the heart of gold. Based on the title, I had originally thought Rollercoaster (1977) was going to be a disaster type movie that were popular in the 70's like Airport (1970), The Poseidon Adventure (1972), or The Towering Inferno (1974), but it turned out to be something a lot different. I guess it was for the best, as a film about a rollercoaster that was running out of control, throwing stars of old off at various points, probably wouldn't have worked too well and would have been like scraping the bottom of the disaster-venue barrel.
The film stars George Segal as Harry Caulder, a government safety inspector who's thrown into a situation having to deal with a terrorist (Timothy Bottoms) bent on blowing up rollercoasters, harming and killing innocent amusement park patrons unless his demands are met.... I was happy to see that my DVD of LOVING showed up yesterday. It's a great, little known, film that stands, I think, as a "missing link" between such European classics as LA NOTTE and later Hollywood films like AMERICAN BEAUTY and THE ICE STORM. The transfer is nice and the sound fine. The trouble is that for such an expensive DVD, there is a startling lack of extras. In fact I've never seen a DVD with LESS extras. While there are chapter stops and English subtitles-which they'd have to do anyway for the deaf and hard of hearing-there are no subtitles in any other language, there's no original trailer for the film, no filmographies, and no commentary tracks. This latter omission is puzzling considering the director Irvin Kershner is still with us, as are the film's two stars (George Segal... Jane Fonda was so respected as a serious actress that her comedy chops sometimes were overlooked. But it should be remembered that her first real hits (Barefoot in the Park, Cat Ballou) were comedies. This underrated 1977 outing also played for laughs, though it had social-satire underpinnings that still ring true.
