An offbeat and charming comedy with elements of science fiction thrown in, director Ron Howard's (Ransom, Apollo 13) unlikely fantasy ponders the price of immortality and the power of everlasting love. A group of aliens travel to a Florida retirement community to rescue some long-stranded colleagues cocooned and buried beneath the sea. But as the aliens take on human form and stash their counterparts in a swimming pool, a group of elderly retirees discover the pool and after swimming in the water find themselves rejuvenated, with boundless energy and insatiable appetites. Soon the retirees are forced to choose between living out their lives on earth with their families, or leaving with the aliens and attaining immortality. More character driven than dependent on the... In 1964 I was in New York and saw this performance. Unfortunately at that time I was more interested in seeing Richard Burton than Hamlet.
I just purchased the DVD and watched it. Forty one years later I realize that Richard Burton speaks the words Shakespeare wrote as easily and with as much feeling as we speak words in our daily lives. He is superb, his phrasing, emotions, facial expressions, all add up to a perfect Hamlet.
As I continued to watch the play I realized how much satire and pathos really exist and are played out more keenly than in many versions I have seen.
The supporting cast is excellent, the minimalistic staging is best and doesn't detract from the performers. I was slightly taken back when I saw the original play by the fact... Burt Lancaster stars in this tough, grim noir-drenched prison flick, in which a sadistic prison guard (a young Hume Cronyn) manipulates tensions and weaknesses to produce an explosive situation. The film's liberal message butts up against its obligatory "crime never pays" ending; the convicts are sympathetic, but doomed from the word "go." A little stagey and lurid, but overall tense and suspenseful -- the ending is a real nail-biter. Recommended. Quite possibly the nadir of Steven Spielberg's career as a producer, this piece of sentimental junk from 1987 concerns five little spacecraft which arrive on Earth just in time to help out some New Yorkers getting kicked out of a tenement. The script's goo just sticks to the viewer, and the cast looks silly by trying not to be silly. You get the feeling that Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment was pretty much throwing stuff at the wall to see what would hang there, and they came up with this ridiculous thing. --Tom KeoghMore Info About This DVD Actor(s): Hume Cronyn - Jessica Tandy Director(s): Matthew Robbins DVD Release Date: Released the 16 March 1999 Usually ships in 24 hours
