Torture Garden

Throughout the mid 60s and early 70s, Hammer Studios counterpart, Amicus Productions, also known as the Studio That Dripped Blood, formed through a partnership with producers Max Rosenberg and Milton Subotsky, churned out a series of wonderful little horror anthologies including Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965), The House That Dripped Blood (1970), Asylum (1972), Tales From The Crypt (1972), The Vault Of Horror (1973), From Beyond The Grave (1973), and this feature, titled Torture Garden (1967). Written by Robert Bloch (Psycho, The House That Dripped Blood, Asylum), and directed by Freddie Francis (The Evil of Frankenstein, Dr. Terror's House of Horrors, Tales from the Crypt), the film features Burgess Meredith (Rocky, Clash of the Titans), Jack Palance (Hawk the Slayer, Alone in the... Panic in the Streets

An amazingly effective film noir action movie, shot on location in New Orleans in 1950, that has twists of plot and explosions of violence that can still make audiences gasp. Elia Kazan, of all people, directed this story of a public health worker (Richard Widmark) and a police detective (Paul Douglas) who have only a few hours in which to capture some fleeing felons who may be infected with the plague. The bad guys are played, with enormous relish, by Jack Palance and Zero Mostel, the latter only a few years before Kazan ratted him out to the House Un-American Activities Committee. In retrospect, this modest crime picture looks like a crucial turning point in the formation of Kazan's distinctive style, a clear precursor to the blistering location work of landmark films like On the... The Swan Princess (Special Edition)

This excellent theatrical feature is loosely based on the Swan Lake story. Princess Odette, having been turned into a swan by a sorcerer's spell, is held captive at the enchanted lake with friends Jean-Bob the frog, Speed the turtle, and Puffin the bird. Along comes Prince Derek, who becomes involved in liberating her by taking on the villain. The movie has been criticized for being too similar to Sleeping Beauty, but once you're watching it--with its strong characters, entertaining vocal performances (John Cleese and Steven Wright are particularly funny), fine artwork, and action--such complaints are negligible. --Tom Keogh More Info About This DVD

The Lonely Man

Apart from the inherent clarity and richness of its black-and-white VistaVision--a wonderful format--The Lonely Man could be mistaken for a mediocre "adult Western" episode from '50s TV. The sets look like sets, not living spaces, and people trade ponderous, pause-laden dialogue instead of talking. Jack Palance plays an ex-gunslinger--a papier-mâché death's head--trying to reconnect with son Anthony Perkins, who's grown up (or not grown up) hating him. Meanwhile, gambler Neville Brand, once shot by Palance, waits for henchman Elisha Cook to pick up Palance's trail so other henchman Lee Van Cleef can kill him (got that?). The backstory is so weakly imagined, and the scenes so wanly directed, we have no idea how many years of history the characters have shared, or... More Info About This DVD
