DVD Eraser

If you're going to submit yourself to a dazzling example of mainstream action, this thriller is as good a choice as any. Eraser is a live-action cartoon, the kind of movie in which Arnold Schwarzenegger can survive nail bombs, hails of bullets, an attack by voracious alligators ("You're luggage," he says, after killing one of the beasts), and still emerge from the mayhem relatively intact. Arnold plays an "eraser" from the Federal Witness Protection Program, so named because he can virtually erase the existence of anyone he's been assigned to protect. His latest beneficiary is an FBI employee (Vanessa Williams) who stumbled across a secret government group involved in the sale and export of an advanced weapon capable of shooting rounds at nearly the speed of light. James Coburn

The President's Analyst

Greenwich Village satirist Theordore J. Flicker made one of the zaniest spy spoofs of the '60s--the ultimate in paranoia and conspiracy. James Coburn stars as a hip New York psychiatrist recruited by his mentor to take on the president as his exclusive patient. After quitting his job because of the stress, he's forced to go into hiding when spies from all sides want to know his secrets. The social and political satire never lets up, as the usually unflappable Coburn becomes completely neurotic. Godfrey Cambridge is hilarious as his cohort and former patient (his opening monologue about self-hatred is a classic), and so is Severn Darden, who plays a charming Russian agent. A true original with the utmost retro appeal today. --Bill Desowitz More Info About This DVD

The Last of Sheila

The Last of Sheila is one of the great underrated films of the '70s: a bitchy Hollywood whodunit and a clever parlor game (cowritten by Anthony Perkins and Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim). Several celebrity chums are invited aboard prankster James Coburn's yacht for a cruel game of "guess the deep, dark secret." Everyone has one; but naturally some are more wicked than others. Richard Benjamin, James Mason, Dyan Cannon, Joan Hackett, Raquel Welch, and Ian McShane are the odd cast of participants. However, the stakes are unexpectedly raised when murder gets added to the not-so-fun agenda. Plenty of inside jokes and red herrings in this nasty and unforgettable film. It's just what you'd expect from the twisted minds of Perkins and Sondheim. --Bill Desowitz More Info About This DVD

Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round

I haven't actually seen this (yes, I know, "0 out of 27 people found this review helpful"), but fans of Harrison Ford will want to know about it because it's his first movie role. It's actually a James Coburn flick, and a very young Ford has about one line as an uncredited bellhop. As I write this, I don't see any mention in the Amazon.com listing about Ford's presence, so I thought I'd post the info for Ford completists. As far as I know, this is also the first time this has been available on home video. More Info About This DVD

Affliction

I've tried to watch this film three or four times and could never get through it. It was soooo slow and dull. I never cared about any of the people and it was just over the top depressing. I understand that some people feel tgar it may be some great acting and a very upscale film, but it really did nothing for me. More Info About This DVD
