This is a by-the-numbers tale of political chicanery and fallen idealism, but it works because of several strong performances. James Spader and John Cusack play law-school pals whose college idealism quickly falls away once they reach the real world. Playing against type, Spader is the straight arrow who goes on to work for the Justice Department. Cusack is the slippery conniver who parlays a job as an aide to an aging senator (Richard Widmark) into a springboard to elective office, all the while cutting corners, compromising his integrity, and breaking rules. "Supernova" is, to say the least, horrible, lacking in unpredictable characters (save for Facinelli) and many more stars in this '99 sci-fi original.
The plot is equivalent to that of a SCI FI Original movie/TV show "Farscape" and "Lexx," to name a couple. The movie has a sort of eerie feeling, like a horror movie, lacking in bright lights, and the actors do reasonably good performances, but it just seems forced and dull. That's the only reasons I gave the second star.
Here's the dull and predictable plot: a medical ship rescues an enigmatic miner (Peter Facinelli) and they find a mystical alien artifact, having found it to be linked to the miner, resulting in terrific special effects--no genuine surprises which is the catch. Glenn Savan's depressing and self-loathing novel about a 27-year-old upper-class Jewish widower mired in self-pity after his beloved wife dies, and who finds love and sexual rebirth with a trailer-trash older woman, was brought to the big screen by the competent director Luis Mandoki (When a Man Loves a Woman, Message in a Bottle).
