DVD The Fly (Collector's Edition)

David Cronenberg's 1986 remake of the science fiction classic about a scientist who accidentally swaps body parts with a fly is both smart and terrifying: an allegory for the awful processes of slow death and a monster movie with a tragic spin. Jeff Goldblum gives a masterful performance as a sweet, nerdy scientist whose romance with a writer (Geena Davis) makes him more fully alive. Next thing you know, a tiny oversight in an experiment causes him to transmogrify, gradually, into something more like an insect than a human. This is Cronenberg (Scanners, Videodrome) country, so expect The Fly to be a gross-out, but in the way that disease corrupts the body and can make a loved one unrecognizable on every level. This is one of Cronenberg's best films, and certainly one... Learn More

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark/Transylvania 6-5000

In the Halloween mood, but looking for some ghoulish laughs rather than gory scares? Look no further! This double-sided DVD is not only a great price, it provides two fantastic 80's cult-classics of silly, monster-themed comedy! Kick your evening off with "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark"....

The lovely Cassandra Peterson dons her famous black dress and wig for the big screen in this hilarious 1988 cult-camp-comedy-classic, and the result is a good time for all! Well, maybe not ALL. Naturally, the humor can get a bit racy, though it's a far cry from today's downright shameless standards! In "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark," Cassandra reprises her legendary TV horror hostess role as the character comes to a turning point in her career. Frustrated with an unsatisfying job and... Into the Night

While caught up in the scandal resulting from the accident on the set of The Twilight Zone movie that killed actor Vic Morrow and two children, director John Landis (An American Werewolf in London) made this manic nighttime L.A. thriller with rising stars Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeiffer. Goldblum plays an office worker with a dead-end job, an unfaithful wife, and a bad, bad case of insomnia. Unable to sleep, his midnight wanderings take him to the L.A. airport, where beautiful jewel smuggler Pfeiffer literally lands on his car. Fleeing Iranian terrorists (one is played by Landis), the two hit the road, and their adventures lead them to murder, mayhem, one scary hit man (David Bowie in a lurid, terrific cameo), and, of course, romance. Perhaps because of--or in spite... More Info About This DVD

Independence Day (Double Digipack)

In Independence Day, a scientist played by Jeff Goldblum once actually had a fistfight with a man (Bill Pullman) who is now president of the United States. That same president, late in the film, personally flies a jet fighter to deliver a payload of missiles against an attack by extraterrestrials. Independence Day is the kind of movie so giddy with its own outrageousness that one doesn't even blink at such howlers in the plot. Directed by Roland Emmerich, Independence Day is a pastiche of conventions from flying-saucer movies from the 1940s and 1950s, replete with icky monsters and bizarre coincidences that create convenient shortcuts in the story. (Such as the way the girlfriend of one of the film's heroes--played by Will Smith--just happens to run across the... More Info About This DVD

Beyond Suspicion

Beyond Suspicion is a little too thoughtful to be accurately called a thriller, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Jeff Goldblum plays insurance salesman John Nolan, who is passively content in his yuppie lifestyle until one night when he's caught in the middle of a robbery. Augie, a store clerk, is killed, and Nolan becomes so obsessed in finding a little meaning in Augie's death that he begins to gradually take over what would have been his life. But of course, all lives are complicated, and Augie's life as an ex-con was doubly so. Goldblum gives one of his trademark quirky performances, and it works well here, as he captures Nolan's discomfort in his own skin. Though not the edge-of-your-seat suspense movie its title might suggest it is, Beyond Suspicion is an... More Info About This DVD
