Jill Clayburgh

An Unmarried Woman

This Paul Mazursky film was considered pretty hot stuff when it came out in 1978 and was part of a wave of films that opened Hollywood's eyes to stories of women discovering their own identity. And it still holds up. Jill Clayburgh plays a comfy East Side wife whose lawyer husband (Michael Murphy) one day drops a bombshell on her: He doesn't love her and he's walking out on the marriage. Clayburgh, who is accustomed to thinking of herself as an adjunct to her man, suddenly must stand on her own two feet. But it's not an easy transition for her. This was one of the first movies to show how tough it can be, and Clayburgh portrays a compelling blend of vulnerability and growing strength. She even meets a great new guy, a painter (Alan Bates) who, she discovers, she can love without losing... More Info About This DVD

Starting Over

Until Boogie Nights, this film had stood for almost two decades as the best performance Burt Reynolds had ever given. In a criminal oversight, he was denied an Oscar nomination, perhaps because it came in the middle of his action-movie winning streak. Directed by Alan Pakula from a script by James L. Brooks, the film cast Reynolds as a newly divorced man struggling to cope with single life in the city. But a blind date (initially misconstrued by the woman as a mugging) leads to renewed hope in romance when he and his new lady friend (Jill Clayburgh) actually seem right for each other. But before he can make a commitment, his flighty ex-wife (Candice Bergen) bounces back into his life to make him miserable all over again with her flirtatious indecisiveness. Wonderfully acted and... First Monday in October

Judicial debate gets a lively cinematic treatment in First Monday in October, starring the odd couple pairing of Walter Matthau and Jill Clayburgh. When a justice of the Supreme Court dies, his appointed replacement is a witty but deeply conservative woman, Ruth Loomis (Clayburgh, An Unmarried Woman, Silver Streak). Loomis immediately raises the hackles of Dan Snow (Matthau, The Bad News Bears, California Suite), a fervent liberal in the minority on the bench. For a while, First Monday in October succeeds in making Loomis and Snow's debates about pornography and censorship lucid and engaging, aided greatly by the actors' obvious intelligence and grasp of the issues. But the movie gets sidetracked by an aimless corporate conspiracy plot... More Info About This DVD

Gable and Lombard

This 70's movie was lost and now has returned to Anamorphic (automatically adjusts to TV size)WideScreen 16:9 DVD!!! There are no extra features with this DVD.

The Golden Years of Hollywood (1930 - 1960) had the great love stories on and off the silver screen. There was Tracy and Hepburn, Bogart and Bacall and Burton and Taylor but none of these were as hot, steamy and as controversal as "Gable and Lombard". Hollywood through their eyes tries to capture this passion with a comedy/drama of the wildest exaggerations. Even so the love story cannot be denied.

It was the 1930's and Clark Gable was known as the "King" and Carole Lombard was the highest paid actress and known as the "Queen" of the screwball comedy (or the black comedy - a bizarre style of comedy that evolved from the... More Info About This DVD

Never Again

I remember seeing Jill Clayburgh in those wholesome romantic movies in the late 60s/early 70s. Boy, is this one different! The language would make a gang member blush! The scene when she wears the sex outfit, while answering the door, may be the funniest thing I have ever seen: I laugh my ass off!! Get this one! More Info About This DVD

Semi-Tough

This comedy is based on Dan Jenkins's novel about two good-old-boy pro football players (Burt Reynolds and Kris Kristofferson). Best friends on the field and off, they're also friendly competitors in the arena of love for the same woman (Jill Clayburgh), who happens to be the daughter of their team's owner. Directed by Michael Ritchie, who was something of a poet of films about competition in the 1970s and early 1980s, this movie has a certain shaggy charm, abetted by Reynolds's knowing way with a one-liner. If Semi-Tough doesn't seem to go much of anywhere, it still has a good time getting there. The best moment is a send-up of an est-like self-actualization program, with the late Bert Convy as a wonderfully smarmy stand-in for Werner Erhard. --Marshall Fine More Info About This DVD
