If you have an appetite for Sicilian soapers, then you're like all those other people who made Mario Puzo's The Last Don the highest Nielsen-rated show for the week in mid-May 1997 when it originally aired. And who could blame you, since the story line of this TV miniseries is chock-full of all the familiar elements that make up a bestseller--power, money, sex, murder, gambling, madness, fame, Hollywood, loyalties made and broken. The story proper begins with a little Romeo and Juliet when Rose Marie, daughter of Don Domenico Clericuzio (Danny Aiello), falls for the youngest son of the warring Santadio family. On their wedding night, Rose Marie's new husband and the entire Santadio family are slaughtered by the Clericuzios to avoid further conflict between the two... Learn More

Meandering around in his warehouse like abode, John Goodman as "Deepthroat" exudes a sedentary and malevolent evil that forms the foundation for this well written, if inconsequential, movie. Ron Eldard stars as Edward, a man with a gambling addiction, who takes his uncle's (Joe Mantegna) advice to work as a runner for Goodman. During this time, he meets a waitress named Corinna (played well by Courteney Cox), falls in love and decides to go straight and give up his addiction. Sorry, Ron. It doesn't work out that way and before you know it, Eldard is using Goodman's money to gamble and even when he wins $110,000, it's not enough: he wants more. Cox gets pregnant, Eldard buys her engagement ring with Goodman's money, and sets up the plot for a dark, disturbing ending. Eldard is... Madonna isn't merely the prime suspect in the scandalous murder of a millionaire with kinky appetites; she's the murder weapon itself in this erotic thriller in the Basic Instinct mode. The art gallery owner by day and icy-blond dominatrix by night is accused of, shall we say, "loving" her victim to death, and Willem Dafoe is the happily married lawyer she lures into the dark thrills of pleasure and pain. The actual mystery is perfunctory at best and the absurd courtroom theatrics a mere formality in a film far more fascinated with sweaty sex, hot wax, and broken glass. Madonna isn't shy about her body and seems to enjoy the games her character plays, but she's no Sharon Stone; there's no danger smoldering behind her seduction. Like her notorious book Sex, this is a... For David Mamet fans, dialogue over special effects fans, fans of charming humor and people intertesed in a view of men without women...this is a quality film. Even for people who aren't fans of any of those things, but open to good acting and even bizarre, absurd conversations, funny non-sequitors. There are three great scenes: One from Jack Wallace as Fred, describing his introduction into the battle of the sexes, another between Jack Wallace and J.J. Johnston about Steven Seagal, and Robert Forster's tour de force monologue towards the end. Only a mother or a certified baby-phile could love this John Hughes comedy (he wrote and coproduced it). Aside from that endorsement, the diaper starts to stink. Baby Bink is kidnapped by three inept crooks, but the child escapes from their hideaway, leading to a chase through the city. Bink's journey follows the story line of his favorite bedtime book, Baby's Day Out, and he goes to a zoo, a construction site, and a retirement center. Hughes is following his accountant's favorite bedtime tale, "Let's rewrite Home Alone again," but with very little of the humor or impact of that smash. A number of scenes center on the crushing or incineration of Joe Mantegna's groin, not exactly family-fare yuks. There are some moments of levity with the crooks and a gorilla. --Keith...
