John Carradine

The Monster Club

Curious horror anthology is loosely based on the works of horror novelist R. Chetwynd-Hayes, portrayed by John Carradine as an active partaker in his own tales. The author is invited by a smooth vampire (the fabulous Vincent Price) to go with him to The Monster Club, where he bears witness to the secret social customs of various monsters, which evidently include drinking, dancing, and watching undead stripping Go Go Ghouls. He is also educated to the mating patterns of these creatures, whose tendency to inter-breed creates such new strains of monsters. All of this is interjected by short stories featuring campy yet fun monsters running amok. A fun side note is that the movie features music by pop-reggae band UB40. Have no sense of humor? Avoid this film. Love campy fun? Don't miss out. More Info About This DVD

Frankenstein Island

I love bad movies, and am used to movies that hurt a lot, but this one even surpassed my high threshold of pain. I had to watch it in two viewings as I just couldn't take it after about the first hour. Brought to you by Jerry "Wild, Wild World of Batwoman" Warren, and his cast of regulars, with special guest 'appearance' by John Carradine, who, apparently, would be in absolutely anything. Here Carradine is in fine form as a disembodied head, which shrieks a lot, but seemingly has no other connection with the alleged plot. Katherine "Batwoman" Victor plays Sheila Frankenstein, and gets to wear the silliest wig I have ever seen. Also look out for a couple of the other Warren regulars from "Batwoman"; I don't know their names, but you will instantly recognize the voices as those of the two... More Info About This DVD

The Cosmic Man

While watching The Cosmic Man, I couldn't help but notice the extreme similarities to the much better movie, The Day The Earth Stood Still, which was released eight years prior in 1951. The movie's main star, John Carradine, plays the enigmatic cosmic man.

Anyway, this low budget movie starts with reports from various locations on the Earth of a mysterious, flying object. This object, which turns out to be a giant, interstellar gumball, lands in a place called Bronson Canyon, a place many movie fans may recognize as it was used quite often throughout the years in such movies as Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), Robin Hood (1922), and The Searchers (1956), to name a few. Well, the giant, space gumball doesn't really land, but hovers in one spot, never actually touching the ground.... More Info About This DVD

The Plays of William Shakespeare, Vol. 1 - Antony and Cleopatra

Part of a nine-play series produced in England, this production of Antony and Cleopatra was meant to offer a more conversational and less intimidating version of Shakespeare, to be used in classrooms where it would make Shakespeare more accessible to students. Still, it's hard to imagine students sitting still for this stiff, three-hour version. Using relatively bare-bones production values for the sets, this video offers Timothy Dalton as the lovestruck Mark Antony, smitten with the temptress Cleopatra (Lynn Redgrave). He's so caught up in his affair with the Queen of the Nile that he loses track of politics at home and winds up fighting for his life against former comrades. The acting is serviceable at best. Shot in 1981, the kicky cast for this play includes Anthony... More Info About This DVD
