DVD Anastasia

Stomping out their usual cuteness and carbon copying Disney's grand animation style to a T, directors Don Bluth and Gary Goldman (An American Tail) create a successful musical comedy from the story of the lost Russian princess. Adapting the story of imperialism and revolution is tricky, and subsequently the film's opening is weak. Once Anya (voiced by Meg Ryan, sung by Liz Callaway) is a teenager and on her own (suffering from some degree of amnesia), the film is quite pleasing though never refreshingly new.

Twentieth Century Fox's big-money gamble to horn in on Disney's realm is worthy. The songs, especially the recurrent "Once Upon a December," by Broadway team Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty are better than Disney's recent efforts. It's worth picking up the soundtrack. The... Learn More

Money for Nothing

I couldn't tell if this was a comedy or not to be honest. I am a big John Cusack film ( loved him since The Sure Thing ). This movie is okay, but a lot of things are missing. The plot is jumbled. John Cusack does good with his acting but the supporting characters are bland, one-sided and boring. Debi Mazar is too annoying for words ( the way she talks bugs the heck out of me ). I've liked her in other films but her character, Monica was way too cold and too much of a golddigger for anyone to believe Cusack's character would want anything to do with her. Michael Madsen is entertaining and Benicio is good ( though is role his rather ignored ). Michael Rappaport is not one of my favorites but he carries his part well. The writing was just too bland. I kept waiting for Cusack's character to... More Info About This DVD

The Sure Thing

Two mismatched college students (John Cusack and Daphne Zuniga) find themselves trapped together during a cross-country road trip, trying to make it home for the holidays. She can't stand him, and he just wants to get to L.A., where a sexy "sure thing" is waiting to greet him with open arms. It's not hard to predict where this sweetly old-fashioned romantic comedy is going to end up, but along the way there are many pleasures to be had. Director Rob Reiner, in his second feature (after This Is Spinal Tap), has a nice eye for the kitschy flotsam found along the American highway, and his identification with the college kids doesn't condescend to them one bit. The movie helped make a star of John Cusack, who gives a delightfully spritzy performance--kind of a precursor to his... More Info About This DVD

Max

The dark connections between art, desire, and evil fuel Max, an alternate-history fantasy that imagines what might have happened if a Jewish art dealer named Max Rothman (John Cusack, High Fidelity) had befriended Adolf Hitler (Noah Taylor, Shine) when he was a frustrated artist, before he turned to politics to vent his hatred. Some critics have expressed fear that even to attempt to make Hitler understandable is to diffuse or dismiss his malignancy; but watching Hitler vacillate between Rothman's attempts at mentorship and the encouragement of an ambitious military officer demonstrates the pettiness, desperation, and craven need that can bring horror into the world. Cusack portrays a generous man with simple decency and not a trace of grandstanding, but Taylor--with... More Info About This DVD

One Crazy Summer

Savage Steve Holland follows up his cult teen hit Better Off Dead with more madcap absurdity. Forget the plot, which takes frustrated cartoon prodigy John Cusack to Nantucket to woo aspiring singer-songwriter Demi Moore and take on the town's weasely real estate developer and his bullying son in a sailing regatta. For Savage Steve, the "revenge of the misfits" story is merely an excuse to unleash his arsenal of gags. Think of it as an Airplane for the teen set, punctuated by wacky twists (hyperactive Bobcat Goldthwait rampaging in a Godzilla suit), demented animated interludes, and the world's ugliest dog. The cartoonish punchlines don't always deliver, but the rat-a-tat delivery keeps them coming so fast it doesn't matter, and Cusack holds it all together with his winning... More Info About This DVD

Being John Malkovich

While too many movies suffer the fate of creative bankruptcy, Being John Malkovich is a refreshing study in contrast, so bracingly original that you'll want to send director Spike Jonze and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman a thank-you note for restoring your faith in the enchantment of film. Even if it ultimately serves little purpose beyond the thrill of comedic invention, this demented romance is gloriously entertaining, spilling over with ideas that tickle the brain and even touch the heart. That's to be expected in a movie that dares to ponder the existential dilemma of a forlorn puppeteer (John Cusack) who discovers a metaphysical portal into the brain of actor John Malkovich.

The puppeteer's working as a file clerk on the seventh-and-a-half floor of a Manhattan office... More Info About This DVD
