DVD Miller's Crossing

Arguably the best film by Joel and Ethan Coen, the 1990 Miller's Crossing stars Gabriel Byrne as Tom, a loyal lieutenant of a crime boss named Leo (Albert Finney) who is in a Prohibition-era turf war with his major rival, Johnny Caspar (Jon Polito). A man of principle, Tom nevertheless is romantically involved with Leo's lover (Marcia Gay Harden), whose screwy brother (John Turturro) escapes a hit ordered by Caspar only to become Tom's problem. Making matters worse, Tom has outstanding gambling debts he can't pay, which keeps him in regular touch with a punishing enforcer. With all the energy the Coens put into their films, and all their focused appreciation of genre conventions and rules, and all their efforts to turn their movies into ironic appreciations of archetypes in... John Turturro

Brain Donors

"Brain Donors" is a very funny movie which does homage to the Marx Brothers in a modern setting. Watch it more than once to catch the many puns, verbal and visual. The mere thought of the ballet scene makes me smile. More Info About This DVD

Secret Window

Johnny Depp gets high off another acting challenge in this tricky adaptation of a Stephen King yarn. Although the mood is too sinister to allow for the mischief of his Pirates of the Caribbean turn, Depp still manages to embroider his role here with plenty of quirky business. He plays a writer, depressed and nearly divorced, who's stuck in an isolated cabin (shades of The Shining) when a stranger (John Turturro) arrives, accusing him of plagiarism. Writer-director David Koepp (Stir of Echoes) does his best to make the rickety material compelling--he gets the maximum out of the cabin set, for instance--but the problems inherent in the King story eventually win out. The climactic scenes are particularly unpleasant, especially in contrast to the cleverness of Depp's... More Info About This DVD

Mac

This film was made in loving memory of John Turturro's father and is directed by John Turturro himself. The film pays homage to the small businessman for whom thing must be done "the right way and his way", which are one and the same. Here the business man is a construction worker, Niccolo (Mac) Vitelli (John Turturro), who along with his two brothers, Vico (MIchael Badalucco) and Bruno (Carl Capotorto), gets disgusted with the shoddy workmanship that is the standard with the construction concern for whom he works. Mindful of the high standards set by his late father, Mac begins his own construction company on a shoestring budget and brings his brothers in with him, calling the company "Vitelli Brothers Construction." He and his brothers set about building quality housing on a small scale... More Info About This DVD

Men of Respect

A fatally ambitious gangland enforcer (John Turturro) collides with destiny after following the murderous advice of three fortunetellers and his shrewish wife . . . does any of this sound familiar, Shakespeare fans?

While this occasionally effective, mostly hilarious drama may not be the first film to transplant the tragedy of Macbeth to a modern-day milieu (that honor goes to a 1955 obscurity with the wonderfully blatant title of Joe Macbeth), it's surely the most brazenly literal, with a jaw-dropping amount of anachronistic boogying by cast and crew. (Viewers familiar with the Bard are advised not to drink milk during the reworking of Lady M's famous "Out, damn spot" soliloquy, lest they run the risk of having said dairy product forcibly eject itself via nasal... Unstrung Heroes

In its quaint, neutered cuteness, the word "quirky" has become an oxymoronic cliche - a way of making unconventionality seem blandly conventional. Quirky is the perfect word for the characters in this cinematic bastardization of a great, moving book. The four mad uncles have been reduced to a couple of only-in-the-movies harmless eccentrics. Trying for a dark-toned comedy of familial mishap, director Diane Keaton dips into the sentimental fraudulence of the Harold and Maude crazy-people-are-more-in-touch-with-life-than-the-rest-of-us genre. But the black hole of the film is Michael (Kramer) Richards, who's opaque when trying to play a character with hidden depth. His "demetia" is weightless, and so, finally, is Unstrung Heroes. Barton Fink

A darkly comic ride, this intense and original 1991 offering from the Coen brothers (Fargo, Blood Simple) gleefully attacks the Hollywood system and those who seek to sell out to it, portraying the writer's suffering as a loony vision of hell. John Turturro (Miller's Crossing, Jungle Fever) plays the title character, a pretentious left-wing writer from New York City who is brought to 1930s Hollywood to write a script for a wrestling movie for palooka actor Wallace Beery. Fink thinks the job is beneath him, but his desire for acceptance gets the better of him, and he suddenly finds himself holed up in a fleabag hotel in Los Angeles, where he is almost immediately afflicted with writer's block. Various distractions begin to enter his life, first in the form of... More Info About This DVD
