While Warner Bros. Superman animated series never lived up to the excellence of the Batman animated series, this second volume of the series contains plenty of solid animated superhero action for all ages. Tim Daly once again provides the voice for the Man of Steel, while Dana Delany is Lois Lane once again, and the always excellent Clancy Brown is once again the nefarious Lex Luthor. The episodes collected here include the 3-part "World's Finest" arc (which is also included on the upcoming Batman animated series Vol. 4 DVD set) in which we see the first cross-over event with Superman and Batman as they take on the Joker and Luthor. Also featured here are the first animated appearences of allies Dr. Fate and Steel, and Supes faces off against Bizzaro, Mr. Mxyzptlk, Metallo, Darkseid... From the creators of Batman: The Animated Series comes DC Comics' polar opposite: the Man of Steel in Superman: The Animated Series, Volume One. Like the Dark Knight's series, Superman: The Animated Series is a successful, modern telling of the classic story. Superman's tale is already known to most people, enduring as a modern American myth. The challenge for the producers was how to make something old and familiar new again. Quite successfully, they managed to modernize the Superman environment and its characters enough to attract a new audience but also maintained the integrity of the mythos to satisfy longtime fans. What lifts Superman: The Animated Series above all past Superman shows is its high-quality animation, strong dramatic scripts, a star studded... How can anyone fault this movie? It's sweet, with a wonderful cast. I think Joseph Bologna and Renee Taylor wrote one of the funniest scripts, and they're performances are just fabulous! Paul Sorvino and Barbara Carrera went right over the top, with their pretentious "Count & Contessa" characters. I'm buying this movie, and I don't often do that, because it's theme of love and soul searching, combined with some of the funniest deliveries is too good not to watch whenever I need a pick-me-up. By the way, I'm not Italian, nor a New Yorker, but a Californian who appreciates talent and humor. Some of the cynical reviewers of this film could learn something from Lainie Kazan! ON TOP of the 2 previous reviews about cut scenes, awkward edits ad nauseum of this classic movie, this VHS version is also SPED UP!! This is an outrage. Now the rocket scientists a UA feel that we should have a movie that we paid for shortened not only by edits but by speed.Cliff Gorman sounds like Mickey Mouse in some scenes.Even the ending was butchered. Why are these people in charge of production? I know the attention span of most Americans is about 5 minutes, however I want what I paid for! In the Halloween mood, but looking for some ghoulish laughs rather than gory scares? Look no further! This double-sided DVD is not only a great price, it provides two fantastic 80's cult-classics of silly, monster-themed comedy! Kick your evening off with "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark"....
The lovely Cassandra Peterson dons her famous black dress and wig for the big screen in this hilarious 1988 cult-camp-comedy-classic, and the result is a good time for all! Well, maybe not ALL. Naturally, the humor can get a bit racy, though it's a far cry from today's downright shameless standards! In "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark," Cassandra reprises her legendary TV horror hostess role as the character comes to a turning point in her career. Frustrated with an unsatisfying job and... For anyone who's wallowed in the inanities of 1970s disaster movies, The Big Bus is not only witty but downright endearing. Instead of an endangered airliner or a capsized cruise ship, this dippily deadpan parody features a block-long, atomic-powered, luxury super-Greyhound setting off on its first transcontinental run with a garish cross section of humankind programmed for redemption, retribution, or just sublime ridiculousness as they roll toward Doom--or Denver, whichever comes first. Writers Fred Freeman and Lawrence J. Cohen, who penned the daffy historical spoof Start the Revolution Without Me (1970), twist the sententious ironies of disaster-movie dialogue into pretzels (priceless scene: Richard B. Shull, as a "terminal traveler" with six months to live, and Bob...
