Frequently given short shrift as a blue movie (which it is) and as mindless (which it isn't), director Adrian Lyne's follow-up to Flashdance (insert own joke here) is a thoughtful, smutty film about a bad sexual relationship. It follows the two-month affair between Elizabeth, an art-gallery dealer, and John, a Wall Street exec. The relationship spirals downward into raunchier sex (filmed, by the way, quite nicely) but principally is about two adults doing adult things but not acting anything like real adults. Attempts at actual human connection, about the longing to be "good," are present here and make this an above-average erotic film. Rourke is just honing his scumbag, bad-boy persona; but it doesn't overwhelm. Lots and lots of Kim Basinger. --Keith SimantonLearn More

8 Mile Rap star Eminem makes a strong movie debut in 8 Mile, an urban drama that makes a fairly standard plot fly through its gritty attention to detail. Jimmy Smith (Eminem), nicknamed B Rabbit, can't pull himself together to take the next step with his career--or with his life. Angry about his alcoholic mother (Kim Basinger) and worried about his little sister, Rabbit lets out his feelings with twisting, clever raps admired by his friends, who keep pushing him to enter a weekly rap face-off. But Rabbit resists--until he meets a girl (Brittany Murphy) who might offer him support and a little hope that his life could get better. Under the smart and ambitious direction of Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential, Wonder Boys) and ably supported by the... Don't even consider this film unless you're obsessed with Kim Basinger or Val Kilmer. I saw it in 1993 and again last year and I had forgotten how boring it was. Now I remember. I wondered what the heck was the purpose for making this film. Kim was on a roll that year I can remember. She'd just finished filming the remake of The Getaway with her then hubby Alec Baldwin. Now that's a good film right there. I like Kim Basinger but not in this. No one seemed to. Along with John Cusack's " Money for Nothing ", " The Real McCoy " was the most overlooked film of the year. I miss 1993, but not when it comes to bad films like this. This should have never been made. Shame on them. Shame. "Hot gets you into trouble," cautions high-living 1940s-era playboy Alec Baldwin. He doesn't know the half of it. Days before his marriage to Hollywood studio heiress Elisabeth Shue, he falls madly in bed with shapely lounge singer Kim Basinger and ends up in an unlikely shotgun marriage. They divorce, they remarry, they divorce, they... you get the picture. Baldwin, all cool confidence in his sharp suits, and Basinger, who looks poured into her stylish, curve-hugging gowns, fell in love while shooting this 1991 film. Unfortunately their onscreen chemistry, apart from a couple of simmering bedroom scenes, is anything but combustible.
Neil Simon based his original screenplay on a real-life Hollywood story of l'amour fou, but even in his hands the ping-ponging romance feels...
