Kirk Douglas

Detective Story (1951)

It appears that Detective Story was given careful consideration from Paramount as noted by the quality of this release. The picture quality is in mint condition and the sound is also very good. The effort and care that was taken is evident the moment this film begins. Anyone who was waiting for this DVD release will have no cause for complaint. Paramount has just released Detective Story along with The Strange Love of Martha Ivers. As to why Detective Story is a excellent quality release while at the same time not giving the same effort to The Strange Love of Martha Ivers is confusing. There is no way that Paramount can justify this other than to just push product out into the market. Again, this has been going on for quite some time without correction. It is important to note that films... More Info About This DVD

Strangers When We Meet

I have seen "Strangers when we Meet" several times on television and just had to have a copy of my own. I love that era and even though the subject matter is infidelity, the movie explores many different relationship intricacies. I highly recommend the movie especially if you like Kirk Douglas and Kim Novak.. More Info About This DVD

Last Train From Gun Hill

Kirk Douglas plays Marshal Matt Morgan (what a great name for a sheriff!), who's looking for the man that raped and killed his Indian wife. His search leads him to the town of Gun Hill, which is run by Morgan's old friend Craig Belden, played by Anthony Quinn. Earl Holliman (pre-Police Story) plays Belden's son, the spoiled rich kid who did the deed. Morgan isn't just facing the son; he's got to deal with the whole town as well as his old friend. Kirk is in top form as the tough as nails, nonsense marshal who sets out to get his man no matter the odds. Director John Sturges made a series of highly competent and enjoyable Westerns during the fifties and sixties: "Escape from Fort Bravo," "The Law and Jake Wade," "Gunfight at the OK Corral," and "The Magnificent Seven." This one is no... More Info About This DVD

Out of the Past

"Build my gallows high, baby"--just one of the quintessentially noir sentiments expressed by Robert Mitchum in this classic of the genre. Mitchum, in absolute prime, sleepy-eyed form, relates a complicated flashback about getting hired by gangster Kirk Douglas to find femme fatale Jane Greer. The chain of film noir elements--love, money, lies--drags Mitchum into the lower depths. Director Jacques Tourneur gets the edgy negotiations between men and women as exactly right as he gets the inky shadows of the noir landscape (even the sunlit exteriors are fraught with doubt). This is Mitchum in excelsis, with his usual laid-back cool laced with great dialogue and tragic foreshadowing. As for his co-star, James Agee immortally opined that Jane Greer "can best be described, in an ancient idiom,... More Info About This DVD

My Dear Secretary

This snoozer is boring and drags on and on. Even if you are a fan of old movies you probably will not like it. Do yourself a favor and skip it. More Info About This DVD
