Batman Begins discards the previous four films in the series and recasts the Caped Crusader as a fearsome avenging angel. That's good news, because the series, which had gotten off to a rousing start under Tim Burton, had gradually dissolved into self-parody by 1997's Batman & Robin. As the title implies, Batman Begins tells the story anew, when Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) flees Western civilization following the murder of his parents. He is taken in by a mysterious instructor named Ducard (Liam Neeson in another mentor role) and urged to become a ninja in the League of Shadows, but he instead returns to his native Gotham City resolved to end the mob rule that is strangling it. But are there forces even more sinister at hand?
There's something about this film that's so irresistible, despite its grandiose manipulation. Maybe because it recounts the greatest air battle in history, achieving the greatest aerial battle in film history. Maybe because it has such a terrific cast (Harry Andrews, Michael Caine, Trevor Howard, Curt Jurgens, Laurence Olivier, Nigel Patrick, Christopher Plummer, Michael Redgrave, Ralph Richardson, Robert Shaw, Patrick Wymark, and Edward Fox). Maybe because it's so technically well-made, thanks to the Bond team of producer Harry Saltzman and director Guy Hamilton and the great cinematographer Freddie Young. Or maybe because there is something truly riveting about watching the British kick the Nazis back to Germany. --Bill DesowitzMore Info About This DVD Actor(s): Michael Caine - Trevor Howard Director(s): Guy Hamilton DVD Release Date: Released the 25 October 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

This massive 1977 adaptation by director Richard Attenborough (Gandhi) of Cornelius Ryan's novel features an all-star cast in an epic rendering of a daring but ultimately disastrous raid behind enemy lines in Holland during the Second World War. A lengthy and exhaustive look at the mechanics of warfare and the price and futility of war, the film is almost too large for its aims but manages to be both picaresque and affecting, particularly in the performance of James Caan. The impressive cast includes Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Dirk Bogarde, Sean Connery, and Liv Ullmann among others. While not a classic war film, it nevertheless manages to be a consistently interesting and exciting adventure. --Robert LaneMore Info About This DVD Actor(s): Michael Caine - Sean Connery - Gene Hackman - Ryan O'Neal - Laurence Olivier Director(s): Richard Attenborough DVD Release Date: Released the 25 October 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

As one of many in the ongoing trend of resurrecting old TV shows and turning them into contemporary Hollywood product, Bewitched tries awfully hard to distinguish itself. It succeeds in lots of surprising ways, not least of which is the star power brought by Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell. Even if they don't create the kind of romantic chemistry that would have elevated the already high concept, they act as delightful foils to each other, but more often to themselves. The conceit of this Bewitched is that it's a self-reflexive look at the entertainment business, with Ferrell playing Jack Wyatt, an actor starring in an updated version of the classic TV show. Out of favor with the Hollywood elite and desperately in need of a hit, he insists on an unknown to play Samantha, as... I read the book many years ago, but had to wait over 30 years to see this movie. Two culprits can be blamed for that long exile: Texas and Michael Jackson. The Michael Jackson angle has to do with some Beatles music being used in part of the soundtrack and the high rate of royalties necessary to liberate their use (hopefully, the DVD will have this). The Texas angle comes from the Brits portraying Texans as some square-dancing, KKK-style, Bible-belt wackos. I live in Texas and as a spymovie fanatic in the Sixties, I could not understand how I missed this movie. Viewing revealed all. If this movie was shown anywhere in Texas back then, it would have been boycotted like a post-Lennon diatribe Beatles record. The Russians (make that commie b*st*rds) seem to be the only ones competent, while...
