DVD Middlemarch

The BBC has raised the mini-series to an astonishing creative peak. A prime example is the 1994 production of Middlemarch, based on the classic novel by George Eliot, which juxtaposes morals and money, grand ambitions with petty jealousies, and pursuits of the mind with bodily needs. A handsome young doctor named Lydgate (Douglas Hodge, Vanity Fair) comes to the provincial town of Middlemarch to start a new hospital; a headstrong young woman named Dorothea (Juliet Aubrey, The Mayor of Casterbridge) yearns to contribute to the greater good of the world. These idealists enter into marriages that derail all their intentions and lead them into lives they never imagined. The network of characters in this six-episode program, ranging up and down the societal ladder, create... Learn More

Hondo (Special Collector's Edition) (1953)

Although scarcely seen in its original 3-D, and entirely out of sight for a decade and a half after its producer-star died, Hondo has maintained a high rep among John Wayne fans--and it wasn't even directed by Howard Hawks or John Ford. (Actually, Ford did shoot some second-unit stuff while visiting Wayne on location.) Half-breed Hondo, companioned only by an antisocial dog, tends to be more sympathetic toward the Apaches than toward the white society he occasionally scouts for. He falls into uneasy friendship with a New Mexico farmwoman (Geraldine Page) whose husband deserts her for long stretches, and whose son (Lee Aaker) is blood brother to the local Apache chieftain. A good, spare frontier tale--Louis L'Amour via James Edward (Angel and the Badman) Grant--in which... More Info About This DVD

The Trip to Bountiful

I was so happy to hear Bountiful was FINALLY on dvd. I had waited so long.

It is without a doubt one of my top 5 Favorite Movies. Ms Page is absolutely outstanding as Carrie Watts. The oscar she received for the role was well deserved. Like a review before said, Ms Page had nuances of a southern lady down pat. I could have sworn that she was my grandmother, right down to the hymn singing. I do wish some of the other cast had won for supporting actors. All played their parts so well.

Now my reasons for liking this movies so much is:

1. A movie about Southerners in which Southeners are cast in a positive manner, not as a bunch of racist and rednecks.
2. The acting and script is simply outstanding.
3. A story that just about everyone can... More Info About This DVD

The Specials

If you have followed comics at all, you'll enjoy this spoof. It not only blasts multiple super hero stereotypes, but also takes on some of the commercialism associated with comic heros.

As the other review has stated, this is a movie that you watch for the great writing and hilarious characters. Jamie Kennedy has one of the strongest characters, Amok, who you will find instantly quotable (or repulsive, depending on your point of view). The overall story does fall a little on the soap opera silly side of things, but that's what you get in most super hero stories anyway (especially if you took away the actual villains or action).

As for the disc, it looks and sounds quite decent, doubt that there's any change from the pioneer disc. The extras are pretty funny,... More Info About This DVD

The Broadway Melody of 1929 (Special Edition)

"100% All Talking! 100% All Singing! 100% All Dancing!" If the math is slightly off, the now-legendary ad campaign for The Broadway Melody can be excused. After all, sound had just come in, and a full-scale musical film was still a novelty. This tuneful 1929 production became a smash hit and won the Best Picture Academy Award® in the second Oscar® ceremony. The story is a creaky tale of two sisters bringing their act to Broadway, but the fun is in the Roaring Twenties lingo and the showbiz melodrama. This is an era when a gal could become the toast of Broadway by standing, motionless, on a stage pedestal ("Those guys aren't gonna pay 10 bucks to look at your face--this is Broadway!"). The tunes include the standard "You Were Meant for Me"; most of the dramatic... More Info About This DVD

J.W. Coop

Cliff Robertson has always been one of the hugely underrated actors of stage, TV & film. Anyone who saw his original performance in Days of Wine & Roses on Playhouse 90(with Piper Laurie) or saw him doing Tennessee Williams on Broadway knows that this is someone who for whatever reasons missed out on the major stardom that was his natural due. J.W. Coop is one more surprise from Mr. Robertson. This movie is the closest approximation I've ever seen on the screen to a Hemingway story. It's full of the rich true details of place and incident, and the aching pain of the fighter/cowboy/soldier/man rubbing up against life, trying to make some kind of mark, some kind of sense, before his end comes, & it always comes too soon for these guys.
