This box-office hit from 1969 is an important pioneer of the American independent cinema movement, and a generational touchstone to boot. Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper play hippie motorcyclists crossing the Southwest and encountering a crazy quilt of good and bad people. Jack Nicholson turns up in a significant role as an attorney who joins their quest for awhile and articulates society's problem with freedom as Fonda's and Hopper's characters embody it. Hopper directed, essentially bringing the no-frills filmmaking methods of legendary, drive-in movie producer Roger Corman (The Little Shop of Horrors) to a serious feature for the mainstream. The film can't help but look a bit dated now (a psychedelic sequence toward the end particularly doesn't hold up well), but it retains its... Learn More

Susan George (Straw Dogs) is ex-groupie Mary and Peter Fonda (Easy Rider) is wannabe-NASCAR driver Larry. They're thieves on the run from sheriff Vic Morrow (The Blackboard Jungle), who carries neither gun nor badge. According to director John Hough (The Legend of Hell House), his white trash cult classic was "an action picture with a lot of stunts." That about sums it up. The Tarantino favorite is slim on character development, but overstuffed with automobile-oriented action (most revolving around a 1969 Dodge Charger). Notable stunts include a game of chicken with a couple of 18-wheelers, a low-flying helicopter chase, and a death-defying leap over a moving bridge (Speed would up the ante with a bus). Adapted from the novel The Chase, Dirty... More Info About This DVD Actor(s): Peter Fonda - Susan George Director(s): John Hough DVD Release Date: Released the 28 June 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

An alternate title for this movie could easily be RV to Hell. Two middle-class couples take their spankin'-new motor home on a trip to Colorado. While camping out in Texas, the men see something they shouldn't--a human sacrifice by Satanists who somehow manage not to notice their Safeway- sized vehicle until the last minute. The tourists flee from the devil worshippers, getting the monstrous RV hung up in a stream, and so goes the rest of the movie. The local sheriff is in league with the devil, and every town they come to is full of pesky Satanists. The vacationers are nothing if not resourceful, though; when a pair of determined Beelzebubbers cling to the vehicle like barnacles, Peter Fonda pokes at them with an aluminum vacuum-cleaner wand until they give up and fall... Originally I rented this movie with the intent to provide my husband with a movie that he'd probably enjoy watching. Something other than a "chick flick."
I wasn't expecting that I would enjoy this movie much but to my pleasant suprise, found myself thinking that this is a movie worthy to be in a dvd collection. I would consider this movie a cross between a comedy and drama (issues of life, death and relationships) but definately more on the side of comedy.
As for the comical aspects, I would think this type of comedy would appeal more to the down-to-earth individual, who has an understanding of and appreciation for this kind of life (rural) and the people within these types of communities.
As a side-note, I think this movie will also appeal to law enforcement.... More Info About This DVD Actor(s): Peter Fonda DVD Release Date: Released the 26 April 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

"A man went looking for America and couldn't find it anywhere" announced the posters that advertised "Easy Rider" (1969). It was a fitting summation of the low-budget film which defied Hollywood traditions and, at the same time, grossed more money than most of the lavish productions of the same year. Although this was the first film either of them had directed, both Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda were very familiar with the youth exploitation films of the Sixties, having appeared in "The Wild Angels" (1966), "The Trip" (1967) and "The Glory Stompers" {1968). They were able to finance their film through Columbia Pictures for $340,000 and it went on to take in more than $50 million at the box-office.
Peter Fonda's superb directorial debut is an elegant, melancholic western tale about loneliness, loss and loyalty. Adventurous movie fans will appreciate the film as a beguiling small masterpiece of its genre. Alan Sharp's lean screenplay explores the bonds between two road-weary saddle tramps (Fonda and Warren Oates) and the woman (Verna Bloom) they both love. The spare story is told with startling emotional depth. While it has its moments of gunplay and violence, THE HIRED HAND will definitely not appeal to the action crowd, as Fonda takes a somewhat languorous approach to the narrative, often allowing genius cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond free rein to linger lovingly on the spectacular desert landscapes. The stunning opening, a slow-motion sequence of breathtaking beauty, will either... A true rediscovery of the most valuable kind, The Hired Hand has been superbly restored after 30 years of obscurity--which followed a pitifully half-hearted release in 1971. The Western storyline is simplicity itself: after many years, a wanderer (Peter Fonda) returns to his farm and wife (Verna Bloom), with his saddlemate (the incomparable Warren Oates) in tow; violence intrudes. But the subtle sexual politics in Alan Sharp's script, the guitar sound of Bruce Langhorne's music, and the rapturous landscapes in Vilmos Zgismond's cinematography create a fresh take on the old form. This was Fonda's directing debut (two years after Easy Rider), and while it has an unmistakably seventies vibe to it, the film also feels like an "eastern" Western, its minimalist style approaching...
