This charming update of Pygmalion (by way of the John Hughes oeuvre, most notably Pretty in Pink) rode the crest of the late-'90s wave of immensely popular teen films (Varsity Blues, etc.), thanks primarily to the immense charisma of its two leads, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook. When school star Zach (Prinze)--who's a jock, smart, and popular--gets dumped by vacuous Taylor (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe) after spring break, he's left dateless for the all-important prom. With a little goading from his less-than-sensitive best friend (hunky Paul Walker), he bets that he can make any girl into prom queen a mere eight weeks before the dance. The object of their wager: misfit Laney (Cook), a gawky art student too busy with her paintings and taking care of her... Learn More

I wanted to like this movie. Really I did. I came into watching it with the mindset of "This looks like it'll be good." Unfortunately, I was wrong.
"Stateside" is set in the early 80s, although there are points where it looks like the 50s. It is about a teenager named Mark, a member of a very rich family, who attends a Catholic school and seems to be something of a slacker. To me, the early part of this movie wasn't very well delineated - I didn't get a good feel for Mark's character at the beginning of the movie. He and his friend find out one of their friends/one of the guys' brothers (I think) has sex nightly with somebody in the class, a girl named Sue. Sue is bright and fiery and makes fun of Mark in class. So of course what is the logical course of action? Why of course... This well-acted, sweeping herstorical epic focuses on the lives of three women, beginning in 1853. China Beach's Dana Delany is Sarah, the family matriarch, whose little sister Euphemia (a delightful and empathetic Tina Majorino) has been living with her best friend, Georgia (beautiful Rachael Leigh Cook), and Georgia's parents (Michael York, Julie Carmen) on a large, bucolic Georgia plantation. After the sisters' father dies, Sarah's husband, upstanding Texas Ranger Bartlett (Powers Boothe), takes "Pheemy" down to Peach Tree, Texas, to live with him and Sarah.
Pheemy and Georgia begin a correspondence chronicling their divergent lives. As Pheemy and her family work their farm and battle Santa Ana and hostile Indians, indulged Georgia is coming to terms with her... We rented this movie on a whim, wanting a good comedy that doesn't rely on loads of toilet humor to be funny. This one fits the bill. It's not an outstanding movie, but if you're looking for a fun, lighthearted movie, it's perfectly adequate, especially since there's several big name stars in the cast.
The local branch of a bank in a small town has three tellers. First is Stuart. He's a little nervous, and he's always telling his best friend, Max, why Max's hair brained make money fast schemes won't work. Then there's Jason, an ecologically minded desert dweller, who lives with a duck. And last is Sheila, who moved out with her boyfriend. The boyfriend is the bank manager, Rick.
In addition to the three bank tellers and the bank manager, there's Carter and Shmally, Mark, and... "Oh my God, I'm a trend pimp!" cries rocker Josie McCoy (Rachel Leigh Cook) when she discovers that she and her best friends Melody (Tara Reid) and Val (Rosario Dawson)--collectively known as the Pussycats--have been recruited in a plot to brainwash America's youth into a frenzy of mindless consumerism. Unbeknownst to the Pussycats, subliminal messages in their chart-topping hit "Pretend to Be Nice" are forcing kids to follow the latest prefab trends as if their lives depended on it. Josie's going to be the Next Big Thing, and to her manager (Alan Cumming) and Megarecords mogul Fiona (Parker Posey), the other Pussycats are expendable baggage in their scheme to dictate the cool quotient of teenagers everywhere.
If you want to see James Van Der Beek and Ashton Kutcher decked out in cowboy hats and leather chaps, Texas Rangers is the movie for you. Van Der Beek is a young recruit out to avenge his family, who were shot down by bandits; Dylan McDermott is the loose cannon commander of the Texas Rangers unit that's out to track those bandits down. Along for the ride are Kutcher, Usher Raymond, Robert Patrick, Randy Travis, and a host of other good-looking young actors. Rachael Leigh Cook provides some assurance that everything is appropriately heterosexual, though a scene in which Kutcher jumps into a washtub with Van Der Beek may raise some eyebrows. Head bandit Alfred Molina grins with nonchalance as his men gun down innocent bystanders. No one in the cast even attempts to speak with a...
