After 11 years in development hell and screenplay drafts by 13 different writers, the long-awaited smackdown of Freddy vs. Jason finally arrives. After making their respective debuts in Friday the 13th (1980) and A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), the hockey-masked killer Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger, replacing long-time Jason performer Kane Hodder) and razor-gloved Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) square off in a slasher-franchise combo-deal that only their most devoted fans will appreciate; turns out this is a lightweight match in which nobody wins. It's an average entry in the histories of these horror icons, comparable to half of their previous sequels, and Bride of Chucky director Ronny Yu satisfies purists with plenty of gushing blood and mayhem when... Trading tragic romance for Faustian malevolence, the 1989 version of The Phantom of the Opera is a surprisingly good example of '80s horror. It was dismissed as gory trash by most critics (no doubt because Kevin Yagher's gruesome makeup effects are effectively revolting), but horror buffs will be more forgiving of this lush production, which ranks well above average for horror films of its time. Set in Victorian London and shot mostly in Budapest, Hungary (for period architecture), the film reunites director Dwight Little (Halloween 4) with "Freddie Krueger" himself, Robert Englund, who had worked together on the Nightmare on Elm Street-based TV series Freddie's Nightmares. It's a good pairing, as Englund does some of his finest work as the Phantom, seen here... More Info About This DVD Actor(s): Robert Englund - Jill Schoelen Director(s): Dwight H. Since apparently only lunatics are writing reviews of this DVD (not you Johhnykay), I thought I'd better chime in to offer a reasonable voice.
First thing: Stephen King has no approval regarding movies like this. He sold off the rights long, long ago, and thus cannot control when and if they get made, much less the quality of the movies.
Second thing: this is not a good movie. Don't make the mistake of thinking that it is. The plot is ludicrous -- it sort of works on the page, but filmed, it is just silly. That said, the movie is not entirely worthless. Robert Englund is fun to watch as the factory owner, and there are a few decent sequences. Mainly, though, I'd say the best reason to watch is for Ted Levine, in a rare starring role as the policeman trying to sort this mess... Alice, from "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master", finds that her friends are getting killed while she is awake (if you don't understand what I'm talking about, go see Part 4: The Dream Master). She soon learns that Freddy Krueger is back, and he is using her unborn child to get to them.
There are two scenes in this movie that I thought were quite disgusting. Also, there was one scene where we are shown Amanda Krueger being taken into the operating room, because she is about to have a baby (this baby is Freddy Krueger). There is only one thing wrong with this... In Part 3: Dream Warriors, weren't we told that when Amanda was finally found after being raped repeatedly by "a hundred maniacs", she was "with child" (ie. Freddy Krueger was already born)? In this movie, she was... If you're like me, you found the annoying, over-publicized, wisecracking Freddy Krueger of the "Nightmare" sequels truly embarassing, Apparantly so did Wes Craven. After directing the absoloutly brilliant original "A Nightmare on Elm Street" (1984), he finally eturned to the series ten years later to right what was wrong and give Freddy a proper burial in the ingenius "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" (1994). After the completely pitiful, direct-to-video 'quality' of "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare" (1991), Craven proved that horror can be artistic and scary, as well as pack a major punch. Both the original and "New Nightmare" stand as a testament to this. Craven changed the face of horror with the original by introducing a villian you couldn't escape from. Fred Krueger haunted your...
