This film was on the television and I saw part of it with my kids and wife and everyone was laughing. So I order the DVD so we can see entire film and it is a family favorite. We watch many times and always laugh. Dr. Cosby makes funny faces and the story is crazy. I thought Ghost movie would be scary for the kids, but this one is just funny. And story is about family-so has good message. Not violence. The kids laugh at the silly parts and adults like the story and the dialogue so it works on different level. This is family classic! This enjoyable thriller, written and directed by Phil Alden Robinson (the screenwriter of Field of Dreams), follows a raggedy group of corporate security experts who get in over their heads when they accept an assignment poaching some hot hardware for the National Security Agency. Robert Redford plays the group's guru, an aging techno-anarchist who has been hiding from the feds since the early 1970s; his companionable gang of freaks includes Dan Aykroyd, David Strathairn, Mary McDonnell, the late River Phoenix, and Sidney Poitier, as a veteran CIA operative turned "sneaker." The technological black box that everybody is after, an array of computer chips that can decode any encrypted message, isn't a very plausible invention, but it's a serviceable McGuffin, and the megalomania of... "For Love of Ivy", starring film icon Sidney Poitier and jazz legend Abbey Lincoln, is nothing short of a classic. The fact that I only learned of it in 2005 is a painful pill to swallow. For so long, I have accepted a standard of film-making that seems sub-standard after viewing this film. I will not spoil the experience for those who have not already had the pleasure of viewing it. I will only say that for those individuals who enjoy seeing talented Black actors working their craft, this is the film for you. From the magic of the script, to the the excellent delivery by its players, "For Love of Ivy" is definitely a pleaser. Do yourself a favor, and add it to your collection. Sidney Poitier and Michael Caine are on the run in a tense political chase adventure that somehow has gone unnoticed over the years. The story is strictly one-dimensional and is about a black South African freedom fighter who is aided by a British engineer in escaping from the government's agents who are hoping Shack Twala will lead them to the resistance movement's leader and organizer. The film has a great performance by Nicol Williamson as the evil, wily and determined South African state security agent on the trail of Twala and accomplice Keogh. A young Rutger Hauer appears as an oily and unreliable pilot who is obliged to lend his services to the wanted men and his own ex-wife. The only flaw in the movie is the rear-projection footage that spoils an otherwise well-made film. The... The last, and least, film in the so-called Uptown trilogy, this 1977 buddy comedy is preachier than its more rollicking predecessors, Uptown Saturday Night and Let's Do It Again. It begins like The Sting, but then veers into To Sir, with Love territory, as Dave (Bill Cosby), a safecracker, and Manny (Sidney Poitier), a con man, are blackmailed by a retired detective (James Earl Jones, who would achieve pop-culture immortality that year as the voice of Darth Vader in the original Star Wars) to work at a community-improvement center and inspire the delinquent youth to respect themselves and find jobs. An answer to the violent and militant blaxploitation films of the period, these films, each directed by Poitier, were the Barbershop of their...
