DEAD END is director William Wyler's 1937 gangster melodrama masterpiece starring Joel McCrea, Sylvia Sidney, and Humphrey Bogart. Written by Lillian Hellman (THE LITTLE FOXES), the film incorporates several intertwining stories centered around a small neighborhood on the Lower East Side where the crowded and filthy tenements of the poor abut the newer walled luxury high-rises of the wealthy. Unemployed architect Dave Connell (McCrea) is torn between the working girl Drina (Sidney) and rich man's girlfriend Kay Burton (Wendy Barrie). Gangster "Baby Face" Martin (Humphrey Bogart) has also returned to his old neighborhood only to find out nobody is glad to see him including his boyhood friend Connell, his resentful mother (Marjorie Main) and his fallen former girlfriend Francey (Claire... Cagney is a crusading newspaper editor in 1930s Japan who's come into possession of the "Tanaka Plan" for world domination. Amidst political intrigue and crossed loyalties, Cagney must now find a way to warn the outside world. A fine, entertaining melodrama that's based in fact, with Cagney as good as ever, but this time with judo chops. If only the Japanese knew some kind of hand-to-hand combat, they might be able to stand a chance against Cagney. Dated only by its condescension toward the Japanese, Blood on the Sun never slacks its pace, providing quick-witted patter all along in the mark of the classic Hollywood style. It seems peculiarly American (in an inadvertent way, of course) that in the film's final moments the day should be saved by none other than Ward Cleaver (Hugh... Depression-era Hollywood produced a slew of movies about sympathetic criminals victimized by an unfeeling society. No other has the power of Fritz Lang's You Only Live Once, the director's second American film and a masterpiece of fatalism. Their homely dreams are crushed by a hostile world, which Lang's scrupulously controlled direction turns into a series of dead ends. In particular, the last half of the picture--a prison break and cross-country ramble inspired by Bonnie and Clyde--is an exceptionally intense downward spiral, swift with predestined momentum. While Fonda and... More Info About This DVD Actor(s): Sylvia Sidney - Henry Fonda Director(s): Fritz Lang DVD Release Date: Released the 24 June 2003 Usually ships within 24 hours
