I expected this film to feel a little hackneyed. After reading about the story, I thought "just a remake of D.O.A. with a few twists." Well it is, and then it isn't. The pacing is fast and tight, and the plot will surprise you. No surprise in that Tim Roth and Gabriel Byrne deliver superbly, but who knew that Khandi Alexander (from TV's News Radio) and Scott Wolf (Bailey from Party of Five) could more than hold their own in such expert company. Scott Wolf is clearly the lynch pin in this production, and his understated performance never rings false. I've seen him on stage and knew him to be a very talented actor, but I don't think anything else he's done on TV or screen prepares you for the sure-handedness of this performance. I got this film by default as it was coupled with the "Legend of 1900" in a 2-DVD pack. I thought goodie ... I really like Tim Roth and in "1900" he is sparkiling, brilliant and ultimately very moving.
The opening music of "Bodies..." is about the best thing about the movie, and it keeps coming back throughout the film, which is a plus (stops you chucking things at the TV out of frustration anyway).
The rest of the movie is a complete pile of pants. The characters are universally unlikeable. Roth seems to try his best with the rubbish script but fails as he has least likeable character of the bunch. You come away not knowing or caring about any of them. This 1994 film is set in Brighton Beach, the area of Brooklyn where Russians have settled. It's a rough and gritty neighborhood and we meet a family with multiple problems. The oldest son, Tim Roth, is a hit man for the mob who's been out of touch with his family for several years but has to come back to the neighborhood to carry out a murder. His teenage brother adores him and follows him to all the wrong places. The mother, played by Vanessa Redgrave, is dying of a brain tumor. The father, played by Maximillian Schell, works hard all day at a newspaper stand, cheats on his wife and is brutal to his sons. There is violence and murder throughout and the audience knows it will just get worse.
