Rod Serling was a man of great literary and social intellect and integrity. Ahead of his time and somewhat less respected because of the genre he worked within and made him famous, he is now recognized as one of the great pioneers into the realm of sophisticated storytelling combing intellect and emotion. His great vision and realization, "The Twilight Zone" remains a testament of his contribution to the Arts and Humanity. It has been said "Man does not live by bread alone." This 40th Anniversary Gift Set is very representative of "The Twilight Zone" television series. There are 19 episodes included. They are not all classics but they do show the diversity of the series held together by a common theme and I think that is what strengthens this set. The 90 minute feature, "ROD SERLING:... Volume 20 of The Twilight Zone DVD collection opens with "Elegy," a first-season episode in which three astronauts are forced to land on an Earthlike asteroid where all of the people seem frozen in time. The only exception is an elderly "caretaker" (Cecil Kellaway), who explains that the asteroid is actually a cemetery where the dead are posed in the posthumous fulfillment of their fondest wishes. This was the third episode written by the prolific TZ contributor Charles Beaumont, and it ends with the requisite twist.
"The Thirty-Fathom Grave" is from the fourth season, when episodes were expanded to one-hour length. The cast includes such TV stalwarts as Simon Oakland and Bill Bixby, but the standout is Mike Kellin, who plays Chief Bell, a crewman on a present-day Navy... Volume 18 in "The Twilight Zone" DVD series offers an interesting combination of two space stories with one about the Civil War. "I Shot an Arrow Into the Air," written by Rod Serling and based on an idea by Madelon Champion, relates how the U.S. spaceship Arrow One disappears off the radar screen and crashes. Three of its astronauts survive the crash and find themselves on what they take to be an asteroid with only five gallons of water between them. Corey (Dewey Martin), decides the only way to survive is to kill the other two. Another spaceship is featured in the hour-long "Death Ship," written by Richard Matheson and based on his short story. The E-89 investigates something shining on the surface of a planet and discover what looks to be their own wrecked ship and dead bodies. ... The wonders and perils of childhood form the framework for this excursion to the middle ground between light and shadow. All three episodes are second-string efforts that hint at the creative downward spiral the series would take in the third season.
"The Gift": A mysterious gift bestowed upon a young Mexican boy by a dying space traveler is discovered too late to have miraculous powers. The episode, originally written prior to filming the show's pilot episode, travels the same thematic path as Serling's "The Shelter" and "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street," but to lesser effect. Vladimir Sokoloff's empathetic performance and a score by classical guitarist Laurindo Almeida are highlights; future director Paul Mazursky appears as a military officer.
Three single-minded characters receive their comeuppance courtesy of series creator Rod Serling, who penned all of the episodes included in this volume.
"Mr. Bevis": Good-natured, eccentric Bevis (Orson Bean) is allowed to "do over" a disastrous day by his guardian angel (Henry Jones)--but at the cost of his personality. Bean and Jones are first class, but like all of Serling's comedic efforts ("Mr. Dingle, The Strong"), the humor is badly forced. "Bevis" was originally intended as a pilot, but was scrapped when star Burgess Meredith refused to commit to a series. Serling rewrote the episode as the third season's "Cavendar Is Coming," but it too suffered from a lack of laughs.
"The Silence": Annoyed by the ceaseless chatter of wastrel Jamie Tennyson (Liam Sullivan), Colonel Archie... More Info About This DVD Actor(s): Twilight Zone - Orson Bean - Whitmore DVD Release Date: Released the 12 December 2000 Usually ships in 24 hours
