Own all five seasons and hated to see it end.Combat was still rolling along when it was suddenly cancelled.Many blamed the
color version of season five helped kill the show,but that is
far from the truth.Season Five is/was terrific as well as the
first four.From what i understand,the producers back in the
60's wanted to get the show to syndication as quickly as possible
and thus the reason for cancelling.....more money!Today its just
the opposite,keep the show running to make more money.I am glad
i purchased this complete series,the only drawback was the time-

Season five was COMBAT!'s final year as a prime time ABC television series. By its fifth season, COMBAT! was in color. For that reason alone these DVDs are a must. Never has the show appeared in such glorious format as the digitally restored fifth season. The cinematography is excellent and equal to any of the war movies filmed today.
Comments have been made to the effect that color contributed to the demise of COMBAT! in that the show lost its gritty World War Two look. Not really. Remember that in 1967, the majority of family television sets in the United States were still black and white. Season 4 is arguably the best of COMBAT!'s five seasons. In Season 4 we find three of the best episodes in the series: The two part "Hills are for Heroes" and "The Leader." The two part episode "Hills are for Heroes" could easily have been a theatrical feature-length film. In another of his directorial efforts, Vic Morrow was able to capture additional emotional dimensions of Lt. Hanley and the rest of the squad.
COMBAT! found its stride during its fourth year. By that time, the stories revolved around the characters rather than adding superfluous misadventures with French resistance and other dramatic vehicles to add fluff to the story. Even when I was a 10 year old watching the original Combat! series each Tuesday night, the screenplay writing and abilities of the actors to fulfill the potential of that writing outweighed any of my childhood draw towards simple action/adventure.
Watching these episodes today at age 50, I find that memory has not deluded me with nostolgic overestimation. This is among the most beautiful of dramatic TV writing, born from the tail end of an age known for great scripts. As I remember the series (Season IV has not yet been released as I post this review), this season presented the audience the series at the top of its game -- with the most memorable episodes contained on the Season III Operation II disk set.
