DVD The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

If there's one movie Danny Kaye fans fondly remember, it's The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. The versatile comedian--also an unsurpassed song-and-dance man--plays a henpecked, thriller-genre book writer suddenly enmeshed in a real adventure involving the (literal) girl of his dreams (Virginia Mayo). Initially criticized for not staying true to the more melancholic sensibility of author James Thurber's original story (Thurber allegedly offered producer Samuel Goldwyn $10,000 to not make the film), it not only works as an independent story, but remains highly entertaining and wears well upon repeated viewing. Kaye's milquetoast Walter fantasizes distractedly about being heroic, whether a gunslinger, an Air Force pilot, or a riverboat gambler. His "Anatole of Paris"... Learn More

Virginia Mayo

The Princess and the Pirate

Bob Hope is in top form in this Technicolor parody of pirate pictures, doing his best vaudeville shtick as an inept performer trying to save princess Virginia Mayo from the evil clutches of governor Walter Slezak and pirate Victor McLaglen. It's all ridiculous fun, of course, but if you're a fan of Hope, you never tire of his self-effacing gags and double-entendres. His out-of-place show biz jabs were always clever, and they're all the funnier in this period setting--particularly the Bing Crosby jokes. But Walter Brennan nearly steals the film as a wacky pirate scheming to steal buried treasure, and tattooing the map on Hope's chest. Yet the two best routines are when Hope tries to conceal his chest while taking a bath with Slezak, and when he tries to impersonate McLaglen as "the Hook."... More Info About This DVD

White Heat

James Cagney plays gangster Cody Jarrett, a killer with a mother fixation. After he and his gang rob a train of $350,000, he gives himself up for a lesser crime he didn't commit, knowing he'll only have to serve a year or two in the slammer before going free. (That he gets away with this is a bit far-fetched, but it finally doesn't matter.)

While in prison an undercover cop (Edmond O'Brien) is placed in his cell, hopefully to find out where the money is hidden. Also while in prison his mother dies, and Cagney performs a mad scene (apparently made up by Cagney on the spot) in the cafeteria that is a brilliant acting performance (and often parodied).

Cagney eventually breaks out of prison, plans another big heist, but it's foiled. In the final, most famous scene,... More Info About This DVD
