I read a few reviews of Kung Fu Hustle before deciding to buy it. They were universal in their praise but probably failed to capture the full charm of the film. The opening is a bit disconcerting in its brutality. I thought, 'oops!', but advise viewers to hang on in there - it only lasts about 5 minutes but it is enough to ensure we know the depths of depravity and evil of the bad guys. The film then moves into its true tale - one of appearances being deceptive and that fame of the sort sought by the hero is illusion. The film uses obvious symbolism. The hero is a loser who wants to join the bad boys' Axe Gang, but he has such innate goodness that all his endeavours to become foul enough to belong fail. He does, however, have one talent they need and this talent allows him to join the...
