Charles MacArthur and Ben Hecht's classic newspaper comedy--about a conniving editor who talks his star reporter out of getting married long enough to cover a big story--has survived lesser adaptations than this one. (Ever see Switching Channels?) But few have been more disappointing. Billy Wilder teamed Walter Matthau (as the unscrupulous editor) and Jack Lemmon (as the fast-talking reporter), who try to get the scoop on everyone else in the story of a convicted killer who escapes on his way to the electric chair. But Matthau and Lemmon, as good as they are, succumb to the temptation to do shtick--and Carol Burnett shows up in a florid, unfunny performance as a hooker. An attempt to bottle the same lightning that struck with The Sting--but Wilder, Lemmon, and Matthau just... Learn More

Directed with a lascivious eye by Gene Kelly, A Guide for the Married Man has the illicit kick of finding a vintage copy of Playboy in your dad's sock drawer. With its zoom shots of ample cleavage and jiggling bottoms, this sophisticated sex farce is Naughty with a capital N. Walter Matthau stars as a desperate husband with a roving eye who is "ready to take the plunge." Robert Morse costars as his philandering best friend who becomes his "coach." Morse's "pointers" are acted out by a stellar cast of comic actors. Scoring highest are Carl Reiner as a vainglorious movie star arranging a cross-global tryst; Joey Bishop as a husband who steadfastly denies, denies, denies even after he is caught in the act by his wife, and Terry Thomas as a man driven to an early grave after his... Delightful romantic comedy benefits from a top-notch script (by Max Shulman and Julius Epstein-co-writer of "Casablanca"!), and the unexpected chemistry between lovable schlump Matthau and starchy Jackson, who are both fabulous. Affirming once again that true love will triumph over casual sex, "Calls" is a charming, clever romance, with plenty of laughs and heart. Matthau fans should flock to this.
Terrific character story. Great title: not easily forgotten. A paean to ice-cool self-control, about a middle-aged guy who keeps his grip on essentials. Cynical, if you like; but what is life about, anyway? Beautifully laconic --- it's nearly all there in the action, the personalities and the events, without tons of explanatory dialogue (although there is a bit of background exposition in the beginning). Charley is not a fundamentally violent man: he's got unusual common sense, good judgement, no fancy ideas, and he doesn't weep over spilt milk. He doesn't drink or smoke: that's why he's always chewing gum. But he doesn't mind wiping out a couple of no-goods, either, like cream on the last piece of cake, leaving the platter clean, with the dishes washed and everything put away. It all has... This is a great, fun movie. Walter Matheau is always a treat to watch. I believe this is the 3rd remake of "little Miss Marker", the first with Adolf Menjou and Shirley Temple and the 2nd made in the early 60's with Tony Curtis (taking the little girl to Disneyland. This version from the early 80's is set in the depression era, with Tony Curtis as the villain. I recommend this movie for the whole family More Info About This DVD Actor(s): Walter Matthau - Julie Andrews - Tony Curtis Director(s): Walter Bernstein DVD Release Date: Released the 23 November 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours

Walter Matthau and Ossie Davis are the best reasons to see this Herb Gardner (A Thousand Clowns) comedy-drama about bickering, octogenarian companions who meet daily in Manhattan's Central Park. Spinning fictions, pushed around by yuppie scum, brutalized by extortionists and drug dealers, the two men go right on with their benchwarming rituals despite the entreaties of family and logic. Gardner deserves a passing grade for his directing effort, though he sabotages a couple of ripe opportunities to let his two great lead actors intensify the emotion of the piece on their own terms. With Martha Plimpton, Amy Irving, and Craig T. Nelson. --Tom KeoghMore Info About This DVD Actor(s): Walter Matthau - Ossie Davis Director(s): Herb Gardner DVD Release Date: Released the 03 August 2004 Usually ships within 24 hours
