DVD Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the... Learn More

Dennis Hopper

Easy Rider (35th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)

"A man went looking for America and couldn't find it anywhere" announced the posters that advertised "Easy Rider" (1969). It was a fitting summation of the low-budget film which defied Hollywood traditions and, at the same time, grossed more money than most of the lavish productions of the same year. Although this was the first film either of them had directed, both Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda were very familiar with the youth exploitation films of the Sixties, having appeared in "The Wild Angels" (1966), "The Trip" (1967) and "The Glory Stompers" {1968). They were able to finance their film through Columbia Pictures for $340,000 and it went on to take in more than $50 million at the box-office.

With its spontaneity and sincerity and its roots firmly in Sixties culture,... More Info About This DVD

Out of the Blue

Dennis Hopper knows how to grab the attention of an audience. In the opening minutes of Out of the Blue, Hopper's hard-drinking truck driver jokes with his daughter before losing control and slamming his truck into a busload of screaming children. With the camera recording the excruciating impact from inside the cab, putting the audience helplessly in the driver's seat, the cinematic whiplash jerks the audience out of any preconceived notions of how this drama will play out. Five years later, daughter Cebe (a brilliant, brooding, angry performance by Linda Manz of Days of Heaven) has grown into a rebellious punk in a backwater town barely looked after by her flighty mom (Sharon Farrell), a well-meaning but childish junkie. When Dad is sprung from jail, Cebe's hopes of a... More Info About This DVD

Colors

Robert Duvall plays a veteran street cop assigned to a Los Angeles gang unit. He takes a headstrong young cop (Sean Penn) under his wing as a partner and shows him the ropes on Watts's mean streets. Penn soon realizes that his testosterone-fueled ways and hair-trigger temper won't get him very far when dealing with the gang-ridden neighborhoods of L.A. Colors is a landmark movie in several respects: it helped bring director Dennis Hopper back into the spotlight after years of self-induced obscurity. Its success at the box office forced Los Angeles's gang problems into the public consciousness and prefigured the next wave of "hood" movies (Boyz N the Hood, Menace II Society, New Jack City) by several years. Though the late-'80s milieu is a bit dated,... More Info About This DVD

Backtrack

Dennis Hopper directed, as well as acted in, this moody mess from 1989, which was barely seen for a couple of years until getting a boost from the rising fame of its star, Jodie Foster. Looking startlingly young, Foster plays a conceptual artist who witnesses a mob hit, thus becoming a target herself for an assassin (Hopper). But instead of killing her, Hopper's killer falls in love, demonstrating his passion by stalking her at a distance, "owning" her every move and keeping her in exile from ordinary life. The resulting isolation squeezes Foster's creative spirit, forcing her to confront doubt and self-loathing--everything that artists suffer as the price for self-expression. Deeply self-conscious, with a calculatingly meditative tone that becomes inseparable from Hopper's tenacious... More Info About This DVD
