DVD Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the... Learn More

Empire Falls

A frame-bursting roster of actors crowds this two-part HBO miniseries, which is nothing less than a look at America through the lens of a small New England town. Richard Russo adapted his own novel, a story of a gently depressed factory town that has always been run by the wealthiest family around (currently lorded over by matriarch Joanne Woodward). Ed Harris plays the central role, a decent, cautious man who runs a local diner and carefully negotiates the political niceties of Empire Falls; Paul Newman is his rapscallion of a father (the son is perpetually picking food out of Dad's beard), Helen Hunt is Harris's ex-wife, Aidan Quinn his feistier brother, and Robin Wright Penn his tragical mother seen in flashbacks.

The goal of Russo and director Fred Schepisi seems to have been... More Info About This DVD

Iceman

Though an excellent film, the release only in a reduced-screen, pan and scan, version is abominable.
I want what any good film collector wants: the release of this fine film in its original 2.35:1 widescreen aspect ratio.
When will the movie producers realize that people who buy DVD films are collectors and don't want to see the films in the "edited" 1.33:1 versions?

A Cry in the Dark

Julia Louis-Dreyfus's Elaine on Seinfeld once offered a non sequitur at a party just to relieve her own boredom: "The dingo ate your baby," she blurted in a bad Australian accent. It was a reference to this harrowing film by director Fred Schepisi, based on a true story. Meryl Streep and Sam Neill play a married couple on a camping trip whose baby disappears. Streep maintains that the baby was carried off by a dingo--a wild dog--but she winds up as the victim of a hard-hearted prosecutor and the target of a nationwide hate campaign, in part because she was a religious fundamentalist who seemed unsympathetic and, thus, became an easy target for the tabloid press. Streep and Neill are both outstanding in this fierce, realistic drama about the ways faith can bolster even in the face... More Info About This DVD

It Runs in the Family

Three generations of the Douglas clan--old-time star Kirk, Michael of Fatal Attraction and Wonder Boys, and movie newcomer Cameron--star in It Runs in the Family. Alex Gromberg (Michael) is a high-powered lawyer who works for a firm co-founded by his father Mitchell (Kirk), who's recovering from a stroke, while Alex's son Asher (Cameron) is dealing pot and flunking out of his senior year in college. The movie moves between the three men's relationships with women and each other. Surprisingly, It Runs in the Family isn't as much of a vanity project as it seems; though some implausible elements serve only to flatter the stars (wealthy lawyer Alex volunteers at a soup kitchen for the homeless, where a babelicious co-worker throws herself at him), most of the... I.Q.

I.Q. has all the elements of a classic romantic comedy. Certainly Meg Ryan has demonstrated she has the stuff for funny love with films such as When Harry Met Sally... and Sleepless in Seattle, and director Fred Schepisi's Roxanne ranks among top contemporary romantic comedies. Even though Tim Robbins received acclaim for dramatic work in Jacob's Ladder and The Shawshank Redemption, his early comedic work shouldn't be forgotten (well, maybe Howard the Duck, but not the hilarious Sure Thing). And Walter Matthau? No explanation needed.

Combine I.Q.'s talent with its fresh story and it charms. Garage mechanic Ed Walters (Robbins) is captivated at first glimpse by pretty, perky Catherine (Ryan), a gifted academic who lives... More Info About This DVD

Mr. Baseball

The working title for this film was "Tokyo Diamond". Tom Selleck, late of TV's "Magnum PI",is an American baseball player who is transferred to a Japanese team after the American team officials believe that Jack(Selleck) is unsatisfactorily playing. In Japan,he meets beautiful Hiroko and falls in love with her. Hiroko ends up joining Jack in going back to the United States. Hiroko's father owns the Japanese team that Jack plays for. This is somewhat like the real-life union of Yoko Ono and the late John Lennon. After success in Japan,Jack is welcomed back to his American team. Dennis Haysbert had a supporting role in this film, probably in part because he appeared in the 1989 Paramount film MAJOR LEAGUE. All-American Jack couldn't quite adjust to the customs of the Japanese. Great film! More Info About This DVD
