DVD Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the... Learn More

Pope John Paul II

Purchased this out of curiosity as to what it might reveal from a historical footage point of view. Was mildly disappointed in that it was a brief documentary with a British narrator best left for a museum exhibit. Considering the Vatican is in possession of footage from the time of Leo XIII as well as that of Pius XI and possibly something of the other two neglected popes:Pius X and Benedict XV, the slight treatment given is somewhat disquieting. Nonetheless the footage of Pius XII is interesting in regards to his coronation, and the enthusiasm he had for riding around on the sedia gestatoria (portable throne). John XXIII was portrayed in a warm light and gives an idea of what he was like. Paul VI came off a little cold. It would've been nice to have full soundbites sans narration with... Inspector Morse - Cherubim & Seraphim

If there was any program that got the closest to reflecting correctly life in Britain during the 80s and 90s, it was Inspector Morse.

While "Masonic Mysteries" and "Last Seen Wearing" are probably the best of the mysteries, "Cherubim and Seraphim" is the one that captures the British 80s/90s Zeitgeist best. The direction of this program is as good as any well-done British thriller.

It was end of an era. Now you'll understand Peter Hitchens. More Info About This DVD

Inspector Morse - Deadly Slumber

This is one of the finest Morse episodes for a number of reasons. One characteristic of this entry is that the viewer is exposed to a number of false leads and to elements of evidence which either point to criminality or to innocence-- only to find that the seemingly obvious conclusions yielded by the evidence have been premature and inaccurate. The plot basically involves the possibility that a wealthy man, whose daughter suffered irreversible brain damage during a minor operation, has decided to take vengeance on the medical personnel involved in the surgery. When the surgeon who performed the operation is found dead in his own garage, the grief stricken father (Michael Steppings) becomes a prime suspect in the murder case. As the investigation unfolds, we learn that there are two... More Info About This DVD

Inspector Morse - The Way Through the Woods

The very best Morse ever. The riddle: why do you hide a body so carefully that no one can ever find it, and then leave the victim's bookbag carelessly along the side of the road? More Info About This DVD

Inspector Morse - The Daughters of Cain

The highlight of this episode is Phyllis Logan. She does a good job of being an ordinary person. You never "see" Lady Felsham in her character. One amusing part of the story is the ceaseless lampooning of academia using the theme of fund raising at Oxford. The basic detective story involves multiple murders and the ways the murderers use to escape justice or receive it themselves by what could be judged as divine guidance of the affairs of mortals.
